| Gearing Up for Art Basel Miami Beach 2008 |
|
In addition to Art Basel Miami Beach's home at the Miami Beach Convention Center and signature events such as the MAM Ball, Masters of Mystery Art Show, and Art Positions, the internationally renowned art fair has a myriad of satellite exhibits around the city. Here are a few to look out for in the coming days:
- Photo Miami 2008 will once again take place in the Wynwood art district, housed in a 40,000-square-foot structure constructed by Prime Event Group. Beginning with an invite-only opening-night reception tonight, the photo-based art fair put on by artfairs inc. will showcase galleries of photo, video, and new media art by more than 60 new and established artists. The event is open to the public December 3 through 7.
- The Bakehouse Art Complex will host a V.I.P. opening reception featuring a performance by the Spam Allstars on December 4 for its "Paraphernalia" exhibit, in which humor, history, politics, and more aspects are explored through a variety of media. Guests will also get a chance to check out the Garden and Grotto of Manifest Destiny, an outdoor installation from Randy Polumbo depicting a field with illuminated LED flowers made of solar panels and glowing sex toys, inside a modified 30-foot Army container. Originally shown during the Burning Man festival in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, the grotto will remain at the BAC until January 25.
On December 5, BAC artists will open their studios for Breakfast at the Bakehouse, coinciding with the official Wynwood studio tour. Infinity Transportation will provide shuttle service from midtown Miami to the BAC December 4 through 6.
- Pulse Miami and Geisai Miami return to Soho Studios Miami in Wynwood. Following 2007's record attendance of more than 16,000 people and the event's highest sales to date, organizers have high hopes for this year's event, with the addition of "Pulse Play"-a video and animation exhibit-and "Pulse Performance," both of which debuted at Pulse New York 2008. The exhibition is open December 3 to 7.
More than 250 galleries from across the world, chosen from upward of 800 applicants, will be showcased throughout Art Basel. Check back daily for continuing coverage of the week's events.
