The Shepard Fairey Effect on Marketing and Event Design

Looking for a somewhat playful reflection of these tough times, event designers and marketers have incorporated bold graphics inspired by Soviet propaganda and Constructivist art into event decor, invites, and campaigns. With more than a touch of irony, of course. The likely inspiration for the trend is Shepard Fairey, the artist who created the Obama "Hope" campaign poster. MORE >>

Blooming Trends for Fall

"With the green movement in play, floral designs are taking on a more respectful interpretation of Mother Nature," says Petal Harvill, president of Petal Designs in Boca Raton.

ALL NATURAL With an emphasis on earthy tones and elements such as twigs, vines, berries, and feathers at events, attendees will be celebrating the abundance of nature as this year's season kicks into high gear. Designers will also feature fruits and vegetables prominently.

Cut greens like bird's nest fern leaf and variegated monstera leaf, and exotic ornamentals such as mini pineapple and protea pincushions are also on the radar. In addition, Brian Joyce of Flourish Floral Productions in Winter Park sees the use of herbs, such as the dusty miller, and organic elements like horsetail and seeded eucalyptus adding to the green trend. Cocktails and Chemistry Collide

Mixologists have long known that the key to a creating a great cocktail is the blending of unique flavors with exciting textures. However, these modern bartending scientists have begun taking mixology one step further by combining traditional cocktail recipes with ingredients such as calcium chloride, liquid nitrogen, and alginates to create all-new concoctions. The result: mojito orbs served on spoons, blue Hawaiis that erupt like volcanoes, and mini champagne pearls-all flavorful spheres enclosed in a gel-like membrane. These bite-size cocktails offer a refreshing burst of flavor as the substance gently floods the mouth.

FROM SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. While the NFL plans to offer the masses a dose of Tom Petty at the big game tomorrow, corporate planners are heading in the opposite direction this weekend, giving the packed Arizona parties a whole lot of rap. The 944 Super Village at SouthBridge kicked off the concert-heavy festivities on Thursday night with a 50 Cent performance. The artist rapped on a gigantic stage in an (unheated) tent, with Paris Hilton gyrating alongside him. Pontiac sponsored the evening—and, not surprisingly, its 2008 G8 car (which 50 codesigned) on stage was impossible to miss.

In a more exclusive turn, Jenny McCarthy and Holly Robinson Peete hosted the "Best Damn Super Bowl Party Period" on Thursday (a play on Peete's' husband's Best Damn Sports Show Period on Fox Sports), with Ludacris entertaining a crowd of 300 at the private Rockridge estate in Phoenix. Next up for the HollyRod Foundation: an invitation-only Chris Rock performance tonight. Diddy also took the stage on Thursday, at Scottsdale nightclub Axis/Radius for Anheuser-Busch's Bud Bowl.
