The Fifth, a staple nightspot and event venue in South Beach, closed three weeks ago for renovations and rebranding. Last night the new owners (Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel among them) reopened the 10,000-square-foot space as Club Play at an event for more than 500 event and hospitality industry professionals, the first of three parties for its grand opening weekend.
"We looked at the people who come to the club and the South Beach scene and [decided] we needed to rebrand to fit our clientele and the area," said Club Play's director of operations, Mark Scott. "We have a lot of N.F.L., N.B.A., hockey, and soccer players that come to our club, along with a lot of artists and people that are part of the South Beach scene who are players in one form or another, so we took that and came up with Club Play, which incorporates everyone and everything they want to do."

Wish restaurant at the Hotel on Miami Beach has redesigned both its dining area and its menu. The restaurant closed in July for two weeks for the interior changes by fashion designer Todd Oldham, who also designed the restaurant when it opened in 1998.
The dining room and patio are decorated with shades of blue and green, inspired by the venue's oceanside location. The indoor space has new celadon and turquoise seat cushions and quartz-topped pedestal tables. The upper dining room, adjacent to the restaurant's main bar, now has a custom-made mahogany and maple wine cellar that houses 1,000 wines. Sliding mahogany and maple panels can separate the space to offer private dining for groups of 24.

Table 8 Closes At Ocean Drive Hotel, Relocation Possible
Table 8 restaurant on Ocean Drive, inside the Z Ocean Hotel South Beach , closed its doors on Tuesday. Josh Woodward, co-owner of chef Govind Armstrong's restaurant, told The Miami Herald the decision comes as a result of the hotel’s change in ownership from a Regent to a Crowne Plaza property.

FROM NEW YORK
After debuting in May, the car-free areas on Broadway are still in the development stages—lingering traffic cones cordon off some sections, and the lawn chairs in Times Square will soon be replaced with sturdier ones—but the city has already started renting them out for events and promotions. The move is a positive one for New York—the usage brings in an additional revenue stream—as well as for planners and producers, who value the added visibility. And according to The New York Times , 20 events have made use of the spaces since May, including Monday afternoon's public promotion from VH1 .

First Spring Miami Spice Begins Today
The Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau announced Friday the incarnation of a springtime Miami Spice restaurant month. Many of Spice's summer and fall 2008 participants have returned for the spring, offering three-course prix-fixe menus for lunch, priced at $23, and dinner for $36 through the end of the month. More than 55 restaurants are involved, including the Restaurant at the Setai , Vix at the Hotel Victor , Pacific Time , and Talula Restaurant & Bar .
The visitors bureau created Miami Spice for the summer months as a way to boost the local economy during the tourist off-season and draw locals to the city’s normally higher-priced restaurants. Earlier this year, the bureau expanded the program to winter , the height of tourist season, due to lower numbers of out-of-towners coming to Miami. —D. Channing Muller
