International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show

1. International Hotel/Motel & Restaurant Show
The Scoop: Sponsored by the New York State Hospitality & Tourism Association, the Hotel Association of New York City, and the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the show hosts approximately 45,000 hotel and restaurant industry types for four days of exhibits, cooking demonstrations, and events. The big social event during the show is the Hospitality Ball, planned by Middleton & Gendron with decor by Atlas.
Behind the Scenes: Show manager Christian Falkenberg of George Little Management runs the show at the Javits Center. Nov. 12-15

2. NYU’s Hospitality Investment Conference
The Scoop: Speeches, workshops, and conferences fill this three-day event, hosted by the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management at New York University. Last year the conference attracted 1,400 attendees. Loews Corporation C.E.O. Jonathan Tisch is the event’s conference chair; big-name sponsors include Cendant, Deloitte, Deutsch Bank, Ernst & Young, and Hilton Hotels.
Behind the Scenes: The event will be at the Waldorf=Astoria again; NYU conference and event coordinator Suzanne Stevenson oversees the event. Production Resources produces the general sessions in the Waldorf’s grand ballroom. June 5-7

3. NYC & Company Annual Meeting
The Scoop: Last year was the first year the annual meeting moved out of Manhattan to Brooklyn, to the New York Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. Developer Bruce Ratner—who wants to develop a sports stadium to lure the New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn—was a speaker, along with Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYC & Company president Cristyne Nicholas. Following the meeting last year, Tisch and Nicholas attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Brooklyn borough president Marty Markowitz to mark the opening of the Brooklyn Tourism and Visitors Center in Borough Hall.
Behind the Scenes: Nicholas and her staff at NYC & Company plan the daylong meeting, which returns to the Javits Center to fete its forthcoming expansion. (Mayor Bloomberg and the tourism group were the expansion project’s biggest cheerleaders.) Feb. 15

4. Corporate Travel World and Travel Technology Show
The Scoop: Now in its 20th year, Business Travel News’s Corporate Travel World draws travel buyers and executives who set travel budgets and manage travel departments from around the country for two days of education sessions and exhibits. The Travel Technology Show focuses on the use of technology in corporate travel. Exhibitors include airlines, hotel chains, and car rental companies.
Behind the Scenes: Paul Paone, director of trade show sales for the VNU Travel Network, plans the event, which will be at the Hilton New York. March 21-22

5. HSMAI’s Adrian Awards
The Scoop: Hosted by the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International, the Adrian awards honor the best work in travel and hospitality related advertising, Web marketing, and public relations of the previous year. At the 2004 event, M. Booth & Associates won the best in show award for public relations for its work on Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa. Holiday Inn and JetBlue were also big winners for their campaigns.
Behind the Scenes: For the fourth year, Adrienne Davis-Brody of ADB Communications coordinated the event. The awards, which had Sex and the City’s Mario Cantone on a Segway as the M.C. in 2004, was hosted by comedienne Judy Gold at the New York Marriott Marquis. Jan. 24
