New York City Ballet Nabs Natural History Museum's Event Director
Sheri Low

As we reported earlier this week, director of special events Sheri Low is leaving the American Museum of Natural History after 11 years. Now here's where she's going: On June 30, she will begin her next post as director of special events at the New York City Ballet. Won over by the idea of raising money for New York arts—and because she is a big fan of NYCB co-founder and choreographer George Balanchine—Low attributes her move to the exciting challenges of working for another New York landmark. Low Leaves Event Director Post at Natural History Museum
At the end of June, Sheri Low will depart from the American Museum of Natural History as the director of special events after nearly a decade in the position. In addition to overseeing more than a dozen events a year, including the big annual fall gala, the next director is tasked with managing the museum’s benefit and cultivation event program, and handling exhibition openings, donor receptions, and five fund-raisers, which gross more than $5 million annually.

Low, who is preparing for the museum’s 16th annual corporate dinner tomorrow night, could not be reached for comment. While keeping mum on the whereabouts of Low’s next job, a rep from the communications office did confirm she will not be retiring after leaving her post. The museum is still in the process of finding a replacement. MORE >>

The Kentucky Derby may have been two weeks ago, but that didn't stop the American Museum of Natural History from bringing a little Southern equestrian style to the Tuesday-night preview party for its newest exhibition, "The Horse." Approximately 600 guests attended the cocktail party, which featured bugle players, a mint julep bar, and, natch, horses. The museum's senior vice president of development and membership, Lynn Debow, and the development department planned the event, which thematically took its lead from the exhibition, a collection of artifacts that explores the history of the interactions between horses and humans. ("The Horse" opens to the public this Saturday, May 17.) MORE >>

The American Museum of Natural History's gala typically draws a crowd of some of New York's power players, as well as plenty of their dollars. Thursday night's event—the museum's largest fund-raiser of the year—was no exception. In fact, as the institution's senior vice president for development and membership, Lynn DeBow, explained, it was the most successful ever, drawing the most people and the most money in the gala's history. A crowd of 650 guests donated $3.2 million to the organization's science and education programs.

The evening included cocktails among the museum's towering iconic dinosaur figures (uplit in red for the occasion) in the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda, followed by dinner under the 94-foot blue whale replica in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life. The benefit also included a live auction conducted by Sotheby's C. Hugh Hildesley, and performances by Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers—on a break from Saturday Night Live due to the writers' strike—and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The evening traditionally features comedy and live music components, the recruiting for which DeBow credited museum trustees Tom Freston (former C.E.O. of Viacom) and Saturday Night Live executive producer Lorne Michaels. "They're amazing. We count on them to get the best talent," DeBow said. Previous musicians and comedians who have performed at the benefit include Conan O'Brien, Neil Young, and Paul Simon. MORE >>

The life-giving importance of water, its precarious nature, and the global necessity to maintain the resource is a pretty serious matter. But for the press preview of its upcoming "Water: H2O = Life" exhibit (the show opens on Saturday), the American Museum of Natural History loosened up the evening with some lighthearted, water-themed entertainment.

In addition to piped-in music, with songs like "Under the Boardwalk" playing as guests ascended the museum's steps, the real gem was Miss Gloria Parker, who performed in the Theodore Roosevelt Rotunda. Parker, who appeared in Woody Allen's Broadway Danny Rose in 1984, played an assortment of songs on 28 glasses of various sizes and shapes, filled to different levels with water. She deftly utilized them to perform songs like "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head," "Laura's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago, as well as a few holiday songs. (Parker can also sound out requests on her collection of crystal, including contemporary pop songs.) MORE >>
