Marketing luxury goods in a time when consumers are spending less and less money is tough. And now more than ever, the events promoting gadgets like cell phones and PDAs emphasize functionality as much as aesthetics. So for Tuesday night's launch of the new BlackBerry Bold—supposedly Research in Motion's answer to the iPhone—the focus was as much on the new smart phone's capabilities as it was on its sleek look.

Produced and designed by Harrison & Shriftman's creative director Ryan Jordan, the 250-person event at a TriBeCa residence involved three interactive stations where guests could play around with the new phone's video and music features. MORE >>

Us Weekly Brings "Hollywood" Party—and Its Decor—From L.A. to New York

Us Weekly’s annual Hot Hollywood party, like so many Los Angeles events, has always revolved around the red carpet and the trendiest venue. But for the party’s 2008 move to New York, the magazine took a decidedly different approach. Producers trucked in most decor from the West Coast to create a sponsor-infused lounge at Skylight on Tuesday night for the crowd of 850—which included the casts of Gossip Girl and High School Musical 3

Making it their third Hot Hollywood partnership, the magazine—under direction of Wenner Media senior event marketing manager Keira Ford—tapped Cara Kleinhaut and her team at
Caravents to facilitate the party’s migration. “Going into a blank-slate venue,” said Kleinhaut, “we could really customize to the sponsors and their signature look and feel. Rather than deal with existing furnishings and just throwing pillows on them, we got to build it from the ground up. It's really satisfying." MORE >>

BlackBerry Launch Recasts IAC Building in Pink Light
The cocktail party's all-pink look

The Frank Gehry-designed IAC Building opposite Chelsea Piers has become known for the white glow it emits at night. But on Tuesday evening, the lighting from the lobby was a rosier shade. For the launch party of the pink BlackBerry Pearl, more than 150 guests filled the lobby space, which had been made over in pink decor and lighting, for cocktails, nibbles, and a first glimpse of the new smart-phone. (Two days later, BlackBerry launched with a similar event in Los Angeles.) Hosted by Elle's fashion director, Nina Garcia, the Project Runway judge who appears in BlackBerry ads, the mostly female-attended event played with the tagline "Are you confident enough to wear pink?"

BlackBerry maker Research in Motion's director of public relations, Shelly Sofer, and national channel marketing manager Carrie Lepage asked their PR agency, Harrison & Shriftman, to design and produce the event. Leading the production team was Ryan Jordan, who recently devised a pink-and-white setting for the Kira Plastinina press preview.

With two months to plan a directive and deliver a high-end press event to garner media attention, Jordan chose the west Chelsea IAC headquarters for its modern architecture and its unique offering: one of the world's largest indoor high-resolution video walls. At 120 feet long and 11 feet tall, the screen dominates the west side of the lobby, an area that can be rented for events subject to approval. And since few events had taken place in the building, the location was an added draw for the press. MORE >>
