When faced with a forecast of thunderstorms and dreary weather, a host can be forgiven for moving an event indoors to keep guests dry. But last Thursday, when rain clouds and humidity sent most people scurrying inside, Burberry forged ahead with an outdoor event atop the New York Palace Hotel to celebrate the opening of its new American headquarters and the illumination of three 50-foot-long signs,
Overseeing the affair was Elena Sapienza, the British brand's director of special events, who worked closely with design and production company Van Wyck & Van Wyck. Some 300 guests, including Orlando Bloom, Hugh Dancy, Lily Donaldson, and Blake Lively, braved the gusts and drizzle—a climate not unusual for London in the spring—on the penthouse terrace to witness the light show on the exterior of the Burberry building across the street.

In the News: Another Blow to Vegas Conventions, Event Planners Find Use for Twitter
|
Attendance and Spirits Down at Vegas Gathering: The International Council of Shopping Centers’ Global Retail Real Estate Convention returned to Las Vegas last week for its annual three-day run, only this year attendance was down a whopping 50 percent, a far cry from the record-breaking crowd of 50,000 last year. Booths were empty, temperatures were sweltering, and spirits of those who did make it out suffered due to the lack of parties. One broker interviewed even said he could hear the buzzing of fluorescent lights on the still convention center floor. [NYO]
Burberry Kicks Off U.S. Push With Party: British clothier Burberry officially launches its New York headquarters tomorrow with a marketing push that includes the lighting of a 50-foot-long Burberry logo on its new Madison Avenue office and a celebrity-filled party for 300 at the neighboring Palace Hotel. Burberry hopes the stunts, new office, and plans for expanded retail presence will help it crack the North American market. [WWD]

Radar Entertainment Merges With Plug
|
As of March 1, Radar Entertainment and Plug Ltd. are one entity, merging their clients and their staffs to form a full-service marketing firm. Running under the Radar name, the bicoastal company (with offices in New York and Los Angeles) will now offer creative direction, marketing, promotion, and event services for entertainment, sports, music, lifestyle, and luxury fashion clients.
Radar head Geoff Renaud, who has a background in concert and music festival production, founded the company in 2003, working with clients such as Nike, Facebook, Pepsi, Jaguar, and Deutsche Bank. (See his most recent events for DWS Scudder here and here.) Lyman Carter, meanwhile, formed Plug in 2001, producing fashion events for brands including Prada, Burberry, Diesel, and Oliver Peoples.
"Lyman and I have been working together for years," Renaud told us today. "The merger comes at a perfect time for both of us, and it's really a case of 'one plus one equals three' with us joining forces. We'll be taking on marketing and events for some of the best names out there, and our combined resources make for what we hope will be a real powerhouse in the industry." —Courtney Thompson
