Fashion's exodus from Bryant Park to Lincoln Center continues. After speculating as such earlier this week, WWD confirmed today that the Council of Fashion Designers of America will hold its annual CFDA Fashion Awards on June 15 at the newly refurbished Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.
This marks a departure from the usual venue of the New York Public Library at Bryant Park, which the awards called home for the past seven years. CFDA executive director Steven Kolb told WWD that the move was to accommodate a larger audience and that the dinner will take place in the lobby following a ceremony in the theater.
Kolb also confirmed that Swarovski Crystal—which traditionally contributes decor elements to the awards and dinner—signed on to continue its sponsorship for the 2009 awards. —Michael O'Connell

1. Fashion Week
This industry mega-event has Manhattan buzzing twice each year, with models at Bryant Park showing off the latest from the city’s top designers (and a few celebrities). Meanwhile, pre- and post-parties light up the town. Fashion Week returned on February 13, and in the fall will run from September 10 to 17, when it will start on Thursday instead of Friday.

Fashion Week Moving to Lincoln Center

After 15 years at Bryant Park, IMG Fashion is packing up and taking Fashion Week to Lincoln Center. The organizer of the biannual shows is expected to announce the move at a press conference this afternoon, but the change comes as little surprise, given the complaints made by the Bryant Park Corporation over the years.
Following a two-year search, IMG Fashion and the Council of Fashion Designers of America have settled on Damrosch Park, the Associated Press reported. Located at the southwest corner of Lincoln Center's performing arts campus, the site houses a tent each spring and has been the venue for events including the CW's 2007 upfront presentation and the American Ballet Theater's spring gala.
The shift uptown will not be immediate—as per an agreement made in September 2007, the shows will remain under the tents at Bryant Park through the February 2010 season. —Anna Sekula

News about Fashion Week just keeps rolling in: Yesterday came the announcement that New York Fashion Week will shift from the first Friday of the month to the second Thursday. According to WWD, this decision was made by executives from the Council of Fashion Designers of America, IMG Fashion, and the Fashion Calendar. The date change will come into effect after February's run of shows—scheduled for Friday, February 13 through Friday, February 20.
Additionally, the CFDA is suggesting alternative options for the upcoming season. "Particularly with the economy, we thought, 'Is there a different way during Fashion Week that designers can show their collections, that makes it more organized and structured for poeple who go to shows, and is there a way designers can perhaps spend less money?'" said CFDA executive director Steven Kolb. Ideas include designers sharing the same time slot and/or adopting a presentation format. Adding to this, IMG Fashion is also looking into an additional venue outside the Bryant Park tents. —Anna Sekula

Split-Up CFDA Award Festivities Walk Guests Through Bryant Park

The Council of Fashion Designers of America switched gears for its 2008 award ceremony, held Monday night at the New York Public Library. Frustrations over the length of the show prompted organizers to forgo the formal cocktail hour this year, hold the ceremony theater-style, and then send guests like Victoria Beckham, Eva Longoria Parker, and Marc Jacobs on a scenic walk through Bryant Park to a garden-themed dinner at the Bryant Park Grill.
Changes became clear during the arrivals. Gone was the grand runway on the steps of the library's Fifth Avenue entrance, with guests instead pulling up on 42nd Street just west of Fifth for easier access to the Celeste Bartos Forum. Glowing orange and pink, the forum looked only a few palm fronds short of a South Beach club. Over the course of the ceremony, CFDA honored designers like Tom Ford, Francisco Costa, and Tory Burch as a slew of famous presenters joined M.C. Fran Lebowitz onstage during the two-hour production, after designer and CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg started the night with an ode to Yves Saint Laurent, who died this past weekend.

Hoping to curtail the notoriously lengthy event of years past with a fresher, faster-paced format, the Council of Fashion Designers of America held its 26th annual award gala last night in Midtown, sans cocktail hour. The event began with a shortened ceremonial presentation at the New York Public Library, followed by dinner at the Bryant Park Grill next door. The crowd of celebrities—both Hollywood stars and the famous designers who dress them—left the party cooing about sponsor Swarovski's chandeliers, the potent floral centerpieces, and a touching opening speech by CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg on the passing of Yves St. Laurent.
As the fashion fete came to a close at the park, we grilled guests like actress Jill Hennessy, IMG Fashion’s Fern Mallis, and nominated designer Marc Jacobs about this year’s departure from tradition and what they most enjoyed. Here’s what they had to say.
“The films that introduced the designers were fun, not too too long, and I was very happy because I was with my good friend Victoria [Beckham] and my partner Robert [Duffy]. We had a good time in there. Wherever they have the event I’ll go. They were lucky the weather was nice. It’s hot and I’m in a suit, but you’ve got to wear black tie to a black-tie event.”

Seventh on Sale Will Return With New Sponsors
|
MAC AIDS Fund, Marc Jacobs, and Topshop are joining the sponsors of Seventh on Sale, the charity sample sale started by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue in 1990, according to WWD. Other sponsors include eBay, Kenneth Cole Productions, and Polo Ralph Lauren. The sponsors will also help produce the event, which will include a black-tie gala and shopping event on November 15, followed by two days of in-person shopping and a three-week sale on eBay. The venue for the gala and shopping event hasn't been announced yet.
The most recent incarnation of the event was in 2005, when it was resurrected after a 10-year hiatus. The sale raises money for HIV/AIDS organizations.
