The MTV Video Music Awards' weeknight timing didn't seem to bother the 6,000-strong crowd of celebrities and seat-fillers who poured out of Radio City Music Hall last night shortly after 11:30 p.m., looking for a party. Lucky for them there was a variety of happenings around town Sunday night, from private label-hosted dinners to five-hour marathons at clubs—most of which Jay-Z managed to squeeze in. At this year's festivities, the focus was squarely on the guest list, with little in the way of decor or production extras.
Festivities kicked off with an after-party hosted by the awards' reigning couple, performers and nominees Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Their Asics-sponsored party was held at Jay-Z's own 40/40 Club. Immediately following the show, several hundred arrived at the Flatiron district venue, which had a Grey Goose bar and featured cast members from MTV's The Hills on the red carpet.

Calvin Klein Plans Second High Line Party
|
Calvin Klein Inc. is planning a second High Line party after first offering guests at its 40th anniversary party a sneak preview of the new public space in 2008, WWD reported this morning. The event will serve as the official after-party to the High Line’s opening summer benefit on June 15.
Requests for details weren't immediately answered by representatives from Calvin Klein, but executive vice president of global communications Malcolm Carfrae cited the park's "visionary, contemporary concept" as the brand's motivation for the partnership in an interview with WWD. The "First Party on the High Line," as it's being called, will follow the High Line's 6 p.m. gala at Pier Sixty and cover the soon-to-be-opened park between Gansevoort and 20th Streets.
Incidentally, June 15 is also the date of the 2009 Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards at its new home at Alice Tully Hall, making that Monday night a busy one for the events' overlapping guests. —Michael O'Connell

To Launch Fragrance, Calvin Klein Drives Guests to Undisclosed Location

FROM TORONTO
When Coty Canada began planning Tuesday's media launch for the new Calvin Klein fragrance Secret Obsession, the company wanted to create a sense of mystery and suspense for guests. “Since the name of the product is Secret Obsession, we wanted to invite all of the media members and really not reveal where they were going," said Aliki Mahshy, director of public relations and education for Coty Canada. So the company arranged for private cars to pick up guests and drive them to a location that remained "undisclosed," Mahshy said.
Guests were dropped at the shipping entrance to a downtown building and taken through a subterranean tunnel of sorts to enter the event space, the the bank vault in the basement of the Suites at 1 King West. (The building, now a hotel, once housed the head office of the Dominion Bank of Canada.) “This location was so indicative of Secret Obsession. When we found this it was extremely intriguing to us. There’s a lot of caged elements and the idea or concept of unlocking something. It was really very fitting for this particular brand," Mahshy said.

Last night on the far west side, Calvin Klein hosted one of Fashion Week's most-hyped events, celebrating the label's 40th anniversary. A temporary pavilion designed by architect John Pawson was built specially for the affair next to the High Line, a one-and-a-half-mile-long abandoned railway being transformed into a public park. The guests, who left the party around midnight, wore black and white clothing and hailed from the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries. Most were completely surprised by the magnitude of the event, and some even plucked white roses to take home as a memento.
A longtime supporter of the nonprofit organization Friends of the High Line, Calvin Klein dropped $3 million for the party, a sum The Daily News reported also includes a donation to the development of the elevated oasis. We asked guests whether the birthday bash was indeed the biggest event of the season.
“When they donate millions of dollars and erect the great wall of Calvin Klein, it’s pretty amazing.”

“The food was amazing. I loved the tuna tartare, and there was a little ginger cookie that was delicious.”
—Dani Stahl, accessories director, Nylon magazine

Wednesday night was to be the highly publicized launch party for the new Calvin Klein perfume, Secret Obsession, at 421 Broome Street’s Aglow Studios, but the landlord of the building appeared to pull the plug at the last minute. Staffers at Coty, which holds the Calvin Klein fragrances license, scrambled to relocate the press preview to a nearby SoHo restaurant, but canceled the party.
When we arrived at Aglow a little after 7:30 p.m., three security guards stood at the door, making sure no one could get in. A few stragglers mulled around the sidewalk and one told us that everyone had been shuffled off to Barolo on West Broadway. Seven blocks and ten minutes later, we found a scene of confused partygoers in front of the restaurant, trying to get out of the rain. The overwhelmed publicity team handed out bracelets to anyone who walked into the restaurant, but as the crowd increased, they started turning people away.

Lollapalooza Lounge Oozes Almost Famous Vibe

FROM CHICAGO Indie rockers and 167,000 fans who love them descended upon Chicago’s sun-baked Grant Park this past weekend to catch Lollapalooza’s 130 bands and performers (Pearl Jam, Daft Punk, and Amy Winehouse among them). Returning for the second year—and running the only swag-and-tattoo concept in town—was the CK IN2U music lounge produced by the New York-based BMF Media Group. The event ran out of the Hard Rock Hotel on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, offering up an AC-blasted venue for bands and industry V.I.P.s to hang out in between the “Lolla” (that’s band-talk for the festival) shows.
“The bands only get so much time in their trailers before they’re kicked out, so we offered them an indoor retreat away from the sun and the throngs of fans,” said BMF Media talent and branding maestro (no joke, that’s his title) Bruce Starr, who was aided in production by BWR Public Relations vice president Mary Kaye Daniels and senior account executive Joanna Kelsey. “The space is almost like a greenroom, with catering, an open bar, and other amenities you’d be accustomed to on the road. It’s a place for them to recharge, get a haircut and some new underwear.”
