It isn't every day that an airline switches alliances—the coalitions of different companies that broaden flight services—so when Continental made its long-planned switch to the Star Alliance, it did do so in dramatic fashion. With C.E.O.s from each of the 24 other Star Alliance airlines in town last Tuesday morning, Continental launched its new partnership by unveiling a new 757 with a dramatic kabuki drop in its Newark Airport hanger and a party for 1,200 later that day at the Rose Center for Earth and Space.

"It's very exciting for us to join the Star Alliance," said Continental manager of promotions and sponsorships Felicia Daniels. "It gives us more access to other destinations." MORE >>

Among the recurring motifs in the table settings at Diffa’s Dining by Design event this past week were a mix of fancy pieces and more rustic touches. There were thick ceramic plates, tumblers, and flatware in dark, heavy materials as well as a thick, fancy silverware. And several designers traded live plants for silk flowers. MORE >>

Museum openings aren't typically rowdy affairs—at least in New York. But last night, to celebrate the opening of its new local outpost, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame hosted a noisy, crowded party where guests snacked on funnel cakes, tagged bars with graffiti, and head-banged along to some rock 'n' roll tunes. Approximately 2,500 guests (double the expected turnout) toured the new Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex before heading upstairs to the main event, a fete produced by Relevent in collaboration with Running Subway Productions and Alison Brod Public Relations. Overseeing the affair for the foundation was Joel Peresman, president and C.E.O. of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. MORE >>

Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is branching out. At a press conference yesterday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Billy Joel, Clive Davis, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum C.E.O. Terry Stewart, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation C.E.O. Joel Peresman announced that come November, SoHo will be home to a permanent annex of the music museum. To be located at 76 Mercer Street, the 25,000-square-foot facility is the first effort from the museum to build its presence outside of Cleveland.

"Establishing outposts like these is becoming a strategy of other major institutions," said Stewart in the official press release. "These projects allow museums to extend their reach, but also provide space to travel exhibits and allow curators to display some of our priceless artifacts for the first time ouside of Cleveland." Every year Condé Nast Traveler draws hundreds of celebrities, advertisers, and journalists to its Hot List party, taking over the latest hotspot with a vast array of sponsors. This year's event, held Thursday night at Mansion (the club in the space that once housed Crobar), was no different—except it was bigger, with a larger guest list and more sponsors than ever. Hosted by the magazine’s editor in chief, Klara Glowczewska, and vice president and publisher Elizabeth H. Hughes, the 1,100 attendees (among them Adrien Brody, Ashlee Simpson, Delta Goodrem, and the San Diego Chargers’ Shawne Merriman) joined 13 sponsors including Qantas, Patron, Porsche, and the Mandarin Oriental. Montel Foundation Flies In Poker Pros for Fund-Raising Gala

Last Thursday, more than 15 professional poker players, including 2006 World Series of Poker champion Jamie Gold and “Duchess of Poker” Annie Duke, came to New York for the Montel Williams MS Foundation Gala & Pro-Celebrity Poker Challenge at Cipriani 42nd Street. According to Hemming & Gilman Production’s senior director of marketing, Bill Darnell, who began planning the event in September, putting on a poker tournament was no easy task, thanks to New York laws that prevent poker events from using real money. Overseen by Las Vegas-based poker tournament officials who donated their time, each guest received an equal number of chips and played until there was only one winner standing (meaning participants couldn't cash out early). The top five players received donated prizes.

“Montel wanted to have a poker tournament as the core of the event, and then we decided to create a speakeasy theme around it to make it more interesting and New York-y,” Darnell said. “The challenge, then, is to have a poker tournament in the context of a gala, and I think we resolved that by having lots of prizes, dancing, and food.” MORE >>
