Preparations for Pittsburgh G20 Summit Took Only Two Months

Despite the vast amounts of international attention the G20 summit attracts during its two-day run, production details for the event actually come together on fairly short notice. When the meeting of world leaders from Argentina to the United Kingdom convened in Pittsburgh on September 24 and 25, only two months had passed since event producers Hargrove Inc. won the business.
"A request for bid from the State Department and the White House came to us in early July," said Hargrove C.E.O. Tim McGill. "And part of the bid process in the meetings wasn't just to provide quotes and create the overall aesthetic and design, but to pitch how the meetings would actually flow."

Gender Gap Questioned at G20: The recent G20 summit in Pittsburgh saw more than just world leaders discussing global economics. Many criticized the spouse schedule, hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama, as a reinforcement of stale gender roles. A Reassuring Example of Swag Bags at Work: BrandWeek reporter Elena Malykhina noticed something interesting at a recent screening of the new French biopic Coco Before Chanel. Sponsored by women's lifestyle Web site BettyConfidential.com, the screening included swag bags filled with items from luxury brands such as Barneys, Darac Beauty, and Repeat Possessions. The direct marketing seemed to take quick effect. Guests started sampling the products right there and were overheard discussing the different brands. [BrandWeek]

New Partners Save 2009 Daytime Emmys: The Daytime Emmys almost didn't happen this year when CBS opted out of airing the award show, but producers at the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences got a stay of execution when Associated Television International and MGM offered to help. Together, the three will host the event this Sunday at the Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles. And even if the ratings aren't up to par for the first-time broadcast on the CW, producers are optimistic the event will continue in some incarnation next year. [Variety]
First Lady Firms Up G20 Schedule: Michelle Obama will make her debut as international hostess outside the White House next month when the G20 Summit comes to Pittsburgh. The economy-focused gathering of world leaders is shaping up to be a busy two days for Obama, as her schedule of spouse-entertaining already includes hosting a lunch at the Andy Warhol Museum, a visit to Pittsburgh's Creative & Performing Arts School, and a private dinner at Teresa Heinz Kerry's Rosemont Farm. State Department Hires Hargrove, Showcall to Produce G20 Summit in September
|
FROM WASHINGTON
The G20 Summit will take place this year at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh from September 24 to 25. The U.S. State Department recently announced that Lanham, Maryland-based Hargrove and Halethorpe, Maryland-based Showcall have been awarded the contract to provide the summit's design, fabrication, project management, freight handling, and technical, audiovisual, and internal broadcast services.
Hargrove, a trade show, exhibit, and event production company, and Showcall, a full-service event production firm, are no strangers to working together. Previously the two companies have joined forces on major events such as Pope Benedict XVI's mass at Nationals Stadium, the G20 Summit in Washington, the G8 Summit in Savannah, Georgia, and the 2009 Presidential Inauguration.

Travel Industry Combats Cancellations: As the U.S. Travel Association continues to lobby the government to support meetings and events during the recession, more statistics have emerged to illustrate how different facets of the industry are suffering. Canceled events accounted for a $220 million loss in room revenue during January and February, and Starwood Hotels—which owns the Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridien, and W brands—has booked 40 percent fewer group events in 2009 compared to this time last year, prompting the company to eliminate 10 percent of its staff, or approximately 6,000 employees. Host City Braces for G20: Protesters in London for the G20 Summit are causing quite a stir. To protect the world leaders in town for the series of meetings on the global financial crisis, London has enlisted a record number of police to maintain order. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that approximately 3,000 officers will be on patrol during the two-day summit, and that number could double, should riots erupt. [Telegraph]
