Informal L.A. Fashion Week Expands Over This Month, With New Entry From Rock Media
Los Angeles's inability to maintain a single cohesive Fashion Week concept has been widely publicized—particularly after the partnership between Smashbox and IMG dissolved last year. But in its place has arisen something of a fashion month; most of October will see fashion-related events in town, with clusters of events taking shape under multiple structural umbrellas.

Between October 12 and 20, the festivities and shows are officially centered around the downtown area, with market week in Hollywood from October 28 through Halloween. Among the early events was Sue Wong's preview for her spring 2010 collection at her historic home, the Cedars; Wong billed the October 8 event as an unofficial kickoff to L.A. Fashion Week. MORE >>

Gen Art Partners With Entertainment and Media Company

In June, Gen Art faced financial trouble, due in part to a drop in sponsorship dollars, but now it looks as though the organization will be getting some much-needed support from a new partner. Announced today, Gen Art will join forces with Rock Media & Entertainment, a two-year-old company that has produced events such as Rock Fashion Week in Miami, Haven House at the Oscars, and New York's Style360 shows during Fashion Week. The merged entity, called R.M.G.A. LLC, will produce its inaugural event on September 15—Gen Art's 15th anniversary Fresh Faces in Fashion show.

“This is an amazing opportunity to create a more powerful platform for the brands and talent we work with. This merger will advance our joint strategy to create branded entertainment and intellectual property for clients that advance the careers of talent and bring branded content to millions of subscribers across multiple touch points,” Gen Art C.E.O and founder Ian Gerard said in the press release. On Wednesday night, confronted by the weak economy and reduced funding from corporate sponsors, Gen Art held its first benefit in nearly a decade, appealing to its supporters and alumni for help. To bring them out and raise the much-needed funds for the nonprofit organization, the foundation solicited donations from its network of contacts—pulling in 70 pieces of artwork to sell and 28 items to auction off.

Hosted by Gen Art C.E.O. and founder Ian Gerard and chaired by an honorary committee that included designer Zac Posen and actor Adrian Grenier, the event drew approximately 1,300 designers, artists, musicians, and members to 7 W New York. MORE >>

Facing Severe Sponsorship Drop, Gen Art Brings Back Benefit to Raise Funds

Gen Art, the frequent event host that matches up emerging creative talent with corporate sponsors, has seen a 70 percent drop in sponsorship dollars from 2008 to 2009. So after relying on money from marketers to fund both its for-profit event production company and its nonprofit wing during most of its 15-year history, Gen Art has made drastic cutbacks and will put on its first benefit in nearly 10 years this week in New York.

"If the recession had hit three months later, it would have been a completely different story," said Gen Art C.E.O. and founder Ian Gerard, thinking back to last October, "but because it all happened before the 2009 fiscal year came, everyone drastically cut back their marketing budgets from the start."

Those cutbacks affected ongoing initiatives with Gen Art. Despite having yearlong deals in the works, official partners such as Acura, American Express, and Citibank all pulled back. "We're still working with all of those companies," Gerard said. "It's just been at such a reduced amount. It's more event-by-event versus an annual deal across all of our events or a large number of them." MORE >>

Organizers of the 14th annual Gen Art Film Festival figured that the somber fare so often presented at indie fests was not going to win over audiences this year, so the slate of films set to premiere during the seven-day run highlight content that is a little more hopeful or uplifting. The fest kicked off Wednesday night at the newly renovated Visual Arts Theater with the premiere of Lymelife, a film set in 1970s Long Island, followed by a party at Chelsea restaurant the Park.

A crowd of 800 people made its way through the packed lobby of the theater, where sponsors such as Dos Equis, Three Olives Vodka, Neutrogena, Insomnia Cookies, and Vapor Water provided product samples, and several of the movie's stars (Alec Baldwin, Jill Hennessy, Rory Culkin) walked a diminutive red carpet. "There's more fun stuff going on at the theaters and at the parties," said Gen Art event director Kaki Stergiou of the many diversions. "This is a fun festival. You can do what you want." MORE >>

Major players like Marc Jacobs, Betsey Johnson, and Y-3 may have scaled back this season, but some labels with fewer Fashion Weeks under their belts are still trying to grab the attention of buyers and editors with thematic displays. Four Tuesday showings were examples of lesser-known labels looking to highlight their runway shows with interesting motifs and novel decor. MORE >>

Despite some notable high-profile absences, there are still plenty of contenders for guests' time on the Grammy week calendar this year—including some newcomers to the scene.

On Monday, Will.i.am and Gen Art kicked off the week with the opening night of the "Worlds on Fire" artist exhibition downtown. Portraits honored 2009 nominees such as Al Green, Beck, Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, Madonna, M.I.A, Nas, Nine Inch Nails, Paul McCartney, and Radiohead. Jacob’s Creek supplied beverages, and guests browsed a silent auction. Proceeds benefited the Black Eyed Peas’ Peapod Foundation and other local charities for L.A. youth. The exhibit runs through Sunday at the Pacific Electric Lofts. MORE >>

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is edging closer, and we've got more news on this season's slew of shows and promotions.

Among the kick-off parties slated for Thursday, September 4, is the official Mercedes-Benz gala at Saks Fifth Avenue, debuting the Wizard of Oz Ruby Slipper collection. The event, hosted by Saks and Warner Brothers Consumer Products, is in anticipation of the 70th anniversary of the musical film starring Judy Garland and will unveil designs from Abaeté, Christian Louboutin, Manolo Blahnik, and others, all inspired by Dorothy's famous red shoes. The items will be on display at the department store as well as inside the tents at Bryant Park, and will also travel to Miami Art Week in December.

Also on Thursday—the day before the tents officially open—are several presentations, including one for intimate apparel maker Yummie Tummie at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. According to The New York Post, event producer Kevin Krier is looking for exotic dancers for "a pole-dancing extravaganza." Over at Hudson Terrace, DailyCandy will celebrate the launch of its Fashion Week blog, the DailyCandy Dossier, and Elie Tahari will stage its first formal presentation in the Pool Room of the Four Seasons Restaurant.
