Godiva Partners With Jonathan Adler to Boost Edible Promo

Consumer confidence may have hit a new low, but experiential marketers haven't given up yet. Less than two weeks ago, Godiva brought back its chocolate-themed lounge for In Style's Golden Globes after-party, and the company's latest bid for attention took place yesterday at the press unveiling of a chocolate-covered suite inside the Bryant Park Hotel. The candy-laden room—where the winner of Godiva's Valentine's Day competition will stay for a weekend—is a concept the company introduced last year. To beef up this latest effort, the chocolatier partnered with designer Jonathan Adler.

"For us the three days leading up to Valentine's Day are the biggest selling days of the year," said Godiva president and C.E.O. Jim Goldman. "Last year [the promotion] was a huge success, and when you have a huge success, you try to top it. Jonathan Adler brings it to the next level." MORE >>

Golden Globe Parties Return With (Most of) the Familiar Grandeur
HBO's Golden Globes bash

Last night's all-star Golden Globes banished some of the memories of last year's scaled-back press conference with a presence that may have been as glitzy a spectacle as ever—or at least since 2007. Although organizers behind parties like the Weinstein Company's annual awards-night biggie axed their celebrations in this year's tough economy, some newcomers like AMC joined the fray inside the celebrity-and-media-mobbed Beverly Hilton. And a trio of annual parties decked the buzzing hotel with roughly as much production-heavy grandeur as their previous incarnations.

NBC Universal brought about 400 people to a viewing party, and about 800 for an after-party in the same space, where sponsor Cartier showed off jewels from its vault in Paris. The over-the-top baubles in cases made for eye-popping decor that complemented the metallic and black look created by Angel City Designs, whose Mark Yumkas described the space as "a very classic Hollywood look with a contemporary twist." HBO Emmy Party Channels Modernist Brasilia at Under-Construction Design Center

For 20 years or so, HBO has been a favored guest at the Emmys, which the cable channel celebrates with a big bash of its own. Add the yearly Golden Globe party to the mix, and the event team has a lot of themes it can't repeat. So for Sunday's Emmy party, HBO's longtime collaborator Billy Butchkavitz went far afield—5,800 miles away to be exact—to freshen the look of the cable channel's celebration of its landslide of golden statues, which included a record-breaking 13 for the lavish miniseries John Adams. Working with HBO vice president of special events Eileen Rivard, Butchkavitz looked to the modernist utopia of Brasilia for inspiration for the network's sprawling party at its usual haunt—the Pacific Design Center's fountain plaza in West Hollywood.

With Brasilia's principal architect, Oscar Niemeyer, as his spiritual guide and a cheerful palette of topaz blue and tourmaline green, Butchkavitz dressed the space in complementary geometric textiles from Argentina, reborn in HBO's colors, and enormous blow-ups of 23 abstract paintings by South American artists Pastor Berrios Herrera, Roque Menaglio, and Janette Goldberg. Popping against the cool colors were splashes of citrine yellow—gloriosa lilies and cymbidum in vases and centerpieces—and silver: oversize jardinieres made of thin strips of metal, votive holders and centerpieces formed by slender branches pointing upward, and studded parsons tables and seating cubes covered in snakeskin-patterned material. Silver retro-style sculptures modeled after Brazilian artwork decorated buffets. MORE >>

Godiva Debuts Promo With Choc-Filled Room
Larry Abel's art-inspired design for Godiva's Decadence Suite

Last January, Godiva created a chocolate-walled lounge for In Style's Golden Globes after-party, but for its yearly Valentine's Day competition this year, the chocolate brand is going one step further, with an experiential marketing stunt that offers a weekend stay at a hotel suite made almost entirely of chocolate. At Divine Studio on Tuesday afternoon, 30 members of the press gathered for a first glimpse at the grand prize, which will ultimately be enjoyed only once, at the Bryant Park Hotel. Erica Lapidus, head of public relations and promotions for the Belgian-based chocolatier, worked with public relations firm Alison Brod and Los Angeles-based designer Larry Abel to produce a wall-to-wall Godiva-loaded room that doesn't melt at room temperature.

"I had to imagine the perfect chocolate-lover's fantasy," Abel said about the suite, soon to be rebuilt at the hotel for the sweepstakes winner. Abel, who has worked with Godiva for four years, said this was the biggest and most extravagant project yet. "It took a team of 14 to bring the brand to life, beginning in L.A. and continuing with the two-day installment in New York," he said. Godiva reps wouldn't comment on the cost of the products used, and Abel admitted there was too much for him to even estimate the number of pounds of chocolate. MORE >>
