Art Basel Miami Beach, the international art fair that attracts more than 40,000 people annually, will kick off on December 2 with a V.I.P. Vernissage preview at the Miami Beach Convention Center, the headquarters of the four-day art fair. Within Art Basel will be 10 programs named for the type of art being showcased or the informational programming they provide ("Art Video," "Art Nova").
For the 2009 show, organizers have redesigned the layout of the convention center’s main exhibit floor and created a new 40,000-square-foot temporary exhibition structure on the sand at Collins Park.

In The News: Travel Industry Continues to Promote Meetings, Madonna's Fund-Raising Faux Pas
|
Travel Industry Combats Cancellations: As the U.S. Travel Association continues to lobby the government to support meetings and events during the recession, more statistics have emerged to illustrate how different facets of the industry are suffering. Canceled events accounted for a $220 million loss in room revenue during January and February, and Starwood Hotels—which owns the Sheraton, Westin, Le Meridien, and W brands—has booked 40 percent fewer group events in 2009 compared to this time last year, prompting the company to eliminate 10 percent of its staff, or approximately 6,000 employees. Host City Braces for G20: Protesters in London for the G20 Summit are causing quite a stir. To protect the world leaders in town for the series of meetings on the global financial crisis, London has enlisted a record number of police to maintain order. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that approximately 3,000 officers will be on patrol during the two-day summit, and that number could double, should riots erupt. [Telegraph]

Last night a tent sheltered a crowd of A-list celebrities and musicians, donors, and distinguished speakers on the north lawn of the United Nations for the most hyped of this season's Fashion Week parties. Hosted by Gucci and Madonna, the event was billed as "A Night to Benefit Raising Malawi and Unicef," with performances by Alicia Keys, Timbaland, and Rihanna. Gucci, a Unicef corporate partner since 2004, was brought on board by Madonna to sponsor the evening, which was conveniently timed with the Friday opening of Gucci's new flagship store on Fifth Avenue. Some 650 attended for the seated dinner and auction, while even more showed up for the after-party.
The event sparked some controversy before it even took place, with reports from The New York Sun, Fox News, and other media sources raising concerns over the retailer's promotional ties to a fund-raiser on diplomatic soil as well as the role of Michael Berg, the founder of Madonna's charity, who is also co-director of the Kabbalah Centre. Yet Madonna, Gucci creative director Frida Giannini, and U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon (who did not attend the event) assured critics that all proceeds would be split between Raising Malawi and Unicef. With tables priced between $25,000 and $100,000, $3.7 million had already been raised prior to the party.
With this in mind, we went to find out what the guests thought about the fete. Near a heavily guarded exit, we polled guests—including Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi and actor Dylan McDermott—en route to their cars. Here’s what they had to say.

Gucci to Host Unicef Fund-Raiser at U.N.
|
Gucci is looking to make a bit of history with its February 6 fund-raiser, which will be held on the North Lawn of the United Nations headquarters on the East River. The space has never hosted an event of this kind (though the Delegates Dining Room in one of the site’s four buildings is regularly available for events) and is technically considered international soil.
WWD reports that the benefit will raise money for the United Nation’s Children Fund (Unicef) and will accompany the opening of Gucci’s 45,000-square-foot flagship on Fifth Avenue. Gucci creative director Frida Giannini will chair the event, along with a slew of celebrities including Unicef ambassadors Sarah Jessica Parker and Lucy Liu. —Claire Hoffman
