Reebok, (Product) Red, and P&G Introduce Holiday Pop-Ups

December’s traditional barrage of pop-up shops around Manhattan hasn’t diminished in light of sluggish retail sales. We’ve already taken a look at what one returning standby is up to, and three familiar brands debuted their first New York pop-ups in the past month.

(Product) Red, the retail wing of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, built its first store near Rockefeller Plaza—a time-lapse video of the setup is on YouTube. Partner brands like Apple, Gap, and Starbucks all have Red items for sale through January 4. Just a few blocks away, Procter & Gamble closes its Brandsaver Live store tonight after a two-week stay on 57th street and trials in test markets Dallas and Rochester, New York, earlier this year. The store features demonstrations and giveaways of Procter & Gamble brands Bounty, Covergirl, and Pantene. Downtown, Reebok has a debut pop-up of its own on Bowery. The ‘80s-themed store features nostalgic limited-edition shoes from guest designers such as graphic artist John Maeda, dean of the Rhode Island School of Design. MORE >>

More's Reinvention Convention Attracts a Surprising Sponsor

Taking readers beyond the page and into a physical space—and earning additional revenue—is very popular these days, as shown most recently by last week's Essence conference and the news that The Wall Street Journal is adding more conferences to its roster. To that trend, add More magazine's first-ever conference for its readers, the Reinvention Convention held on Tuesday at Pier Sixty.

Discussion of a conference began about two years ago, said More marketing director Julie Mahoney. "Our readers are so engaged with the magazine—we've gotten a huge reader response to the model search and the marathon," she said, referring to two of More's signature events. The theme for the inaugural conference was easy: Reinvention is a huge topic for the magazine.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day was sponsor Harley Davidson. The motorcycle maker has been trying to attract women for several years, and in talking with the magazine about an ad buy decided to sign on to the conference, where attendees could pose atop a 1200 Sportster or try on Harley clothing and accessories. In addition, the centerpieces at the luncheon were in Harley colors—orange roses set in black rocks. MORE >>

Harley Davidson Flies European Journalists to New York Launch
A new Harley.

New York is one of the few places in the world where you can have anything you'd like, just the way you like it, so it was fitting that Harley Davidson chose to introduce its customizable 2008 motorcycles to the European market by flying 100 journalists to the city this week. The manufacturer aimed to give the group a unique experience that reflected (and rivaled) the bikes themselves.

The party kicked off Wednesday night as a set of double doors burst open and the five new models were driven down a smoke-covered carpet made to look like a road. (Planners chose Chelsea’s Helen Mills Theater for its accessible ground-floor location.) Manning the first bike was Bill Davidson, director of motorcycle product development and great-grandson of one of the company’s founders, who spoke about the significance of the new line before the jet-lagged group broke for an hour of food and cocktails.
