In the News: Cheap Rentals Pave Way for Pop-Ups, ISES Event Raises Money for Planners in Need
|
Pop-Ups Offer Return on Smaller Investment: The rise in cheap real estate and discount rentals made 2009 a boom year for pop-up stores (a trend we reported in May), when just a few years ago, they were considered a major marketing investment. The combination of stunt marketing and extra retail space has benefited big brands and real estate professionals in the past few months. Names such as Hermes, Gap, Seven, Daffy's, eBay, and the New Jersey Division of Travel and Tourism are just some of those who sponsored pop-ups this summer alone. [AdAge]
Charity at ISES EventWorld Raises $25,000: At San Francisco's recent ISES EventWorld conference, held at the San Francisco Design Center in August, industry nonprofit Search Foundation managed to raise $25,000 from the estimated 200 attendees. Benefiting event professionals confronted with catastrophes and other problems, the 12-year-old organization has been present for the past two incarnations of EventWorld. With more than 60 sponsors, the wine and food pairing fund-raiser was hosted by the Napa-Sonoma and Northern California Chapters of ISES. [Search]

As Big ISES Gala Marks Anniversary, Industry Vets Reflect on 20 Years

The New York chapter of the International Special Events Society went big for its Big Apple awards at Cipriani Wall Street Tuesday night, which also marked the group's 20th anniversary.
Beyond the upscale surroundings, which ranged from four-foot tall candelabra centerpieces by Nancy Kitchen of the Flower Loft to four separate bars offering top-shelf booze, the event itself grew this year, garnering some 500 attendees at 50 tables of 10—a number that grew from 30 in the past week. The attendance spike can largely be attributed to the organization’s decision to honor 20 table-buying industry individuals and organizations, among them Preston Bailey, Elyse Kroll, Scharf Weisberg, Alpine Creative, and yours truly, BizBash Media, in addition to handing out 13 awards. Many of the planners and vendors in attendance were quick to mention the overall upgrade in quality (the food, from appetizers to dessert, was the talk of the night).
As the numbers rose, so did the evening's run time. Kicking off with a V.I.P. reception at 6 p.m., the festivities didn’t conclude until close to 11. By 10 p.m., when a five-minute-long Phantom of the Opera skit took over the proceedings, many awards were still waiting to be doled out. (Among the winners were Empire Force Events, taking home both Best Table Top Design and Best Green Initiative, and Levy Lighting, which won Best Photographic Image and Best Transformation of a Space.)
In spirit of the 20th anniversary, we asked guests how they think the industry has changed in the past 20 years. Here’s what they had to say.

ISES Celebrates 20 Years With New Initiative
|
Last night at the South Street Seaport Museum, the International Special Events Society (ISES) kicked off its 20th-year celebration with an event for 200 people, including current members, five past presidents, and new faces from the industry. The first hour offered live jazz entertainment, apple martinis, and food from Mangia. ISES's anniversary tour will continue into 2008, ending in June with the Big Apple Awards gala, which will honor 20 people who have made contributions within the event planning, production/design, and travel and tourism industries.
Launching one of the most significant initiatives of its 20th year, ISES has formed a strategic partnership with the NYU School of Continuing and Professional Studies. The ISES New York Metro Institute at NYU will feature four educational intensives that will focus on events marketing, communications, service delivery, and entrepreneurship. “This alliance with one of the top educational institutions in America is a special member benefit,” said Liz Glover Wilson, director of corporate events at iStar Financial and the current president of ISES. “It is focused on the strength of education and supports the mission of ISES, which is to educate, advance, and promote the special events industry and its network of professionals.” —Lauren Matison
