At last, a bigger Javits. Long-awaited and much-delayed, the expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center has finally begun, and on Friday morning the organizers of the New York International Auto Show announced that the first phase is expected to be completed by June 2010. Originally envisioned during former governor George Pataki's administration and subject to numerous budget cuts, the scaled-back $463 million project received final approval from New York's Public Authority Control Board in July.

The two components of the development involve the construction of a 100,000-square-foot facility on the Midtown West block bounded by 39th Street, 11th Avenue, 40th Street, and 12th Avenue—which will be connected to the existing center by a 15-foot-wide passageway—and the repair of the current site's leaky roof. The addition on the north side of the campus, tentatively named Javits Center North, will increase exhibition space by 40,000 square feet, with the other 60,000 devoted to prefunction, registration, and food service areas, as well as a truck court and loading docks. Once this area is available for use, renovations will start next June and finish by 2013. MORE >>

Governor Paterson Confirms Approval of Javits Renovation and Expansion
The plan to expand and renovate the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center is still very much in the works. On Tuesday, Governor David Paterson announced that the Empire State Development Corporation Board has approved the $463 million proposal to upgrade the exposition hall and add 40,000 square feet of exhibition space.

"The renovation will effectively address the Javits Center’s critical repair needs, and the modest expansion is at least a first step toward meeting the continuing demand for additional convention space,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a press release.

Should the project be approved by New York state's Public Authority Control Board, the expansion could be completed by 2010, with the renovation finished in 2013.   —Anna Sekula

Has the State Abandoned Plans for Javits Hotel?

Plans for a hotel within the planned expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center may be scrapped, according to The Observer. The outlook for the development is ambiguous, especially after the state refunded deposits from hotel bidders earlier this month. "We are currently evaluating the market feasibility of the hotel in light of the reduced scope of the renovation/expansion and will make a determination on reissuing the RFP [request for proposal] thereafter, " the Empire State Development Corporation's Warner Johnston told the newspaper.

The original plan called for a hotel with at least 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space, but with budgetary concerns and the downsizing of the project, this recent move doesn't come as much of a surprise. However, the future of the site appears to be getting more and more unclear as officials seem less enthusiastic about the costly project, which has, according to The Observer, already involved more than $60 million spent on outside contractors.   —Anna Sekula

With Javits Expansion All But Scrapped, Officials Now Eyeing Queens
The New York Post is reporting that state officials are looking at Queens for a possible site for a new convention center that, in the long term, would reduce the pressure on the Javits Center to meet demand by expanding its current square footage. According to today's paper, the availability of land (and the lower real-estate prices) make the borough an attractive option for a conference and trade show venue, and choices include the Aqueduct Race Track, Willets Point, and the Sunnyside railroad yards.

This doesn't mean that all plans for Javits have been completely abandoned, as there is still interest in renovating the current site, as well as recognition of the need to have an option for large meetings in Manhattan.   —Anna Sekula

Will They or Won't They: Officials Still Undecided on Javits Expansion
The saga of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center expansion plan drags on. With concerns over escalating costs, state officials have discussed scaling back the project, although a conclusive decision has yet to be reached. Last Tuesday, The Observer reported that Governor Eliot Spitzer's strategy to sell nearby land has provoked criticism from City Council speaker Christine Quinn and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, while other critics, including Senator Charles Schumer, have objected to downsizing the expansion.

Spitzer has been getting heat from the other side, too: Trade show producers are apparently angry with the current proposal, which includes removing the truck-marshaling yard south of the convention center and replacing it with a smaller facility on 12th Avenue. Both the Observer piece and a story in The New York Times today report on the frustrations from expo organizers, sponsors, and contractors such as the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association, Freeman, Reed Exhibitions, and George Little Management.
