For Barbie's 50th Anniversary, Mattel Makes Life-Size Malibu Dream House

You might say that Mattel had an insta-theme for its Los Angeles bash for about 200 celebrating the iconic Barbie doll's 50th anniversary. Playing off the Malibu Dream House toy—a coveted accessory for the doll—organizers picked a real life beach house on Pacific Coast Highway and went wild with full-size incarnations of the doll's tiny treasures and pleasures. The date of the party, March 9, was the doll's actual birth—er—launch day at New York's Toy Fair 50 years ago.

Mattel's Lauren Dougherty—along with two other co-chairs of the marketing campaign, Liz Grampp and Brad Armistead—tapped Colin Cowie to plan the party and conjure the food and beverage ideas and Jonathan Adler to decorate the interior of the home. "Barbie is a reflection of fashion, pop culture, and aspiration, and that's really how we celebrated her for her 50th birthday," Dougherty said. "In many ways, the Malibu Dream House [party] was the quintessential moment [in the campaign] because she is a California girl—this was our big marquee moment." MORE >>

Godiva Partners With Jonathan Adler to Boost Edible Promo

Consumer confidence may have hit a new low, but experiential marketers haven't given up yet. Less than two weeks ago, Godiva brought back its chocolate-themed lounge for In Style's Golden Globes after-party, and the company's latest bid for attention took place yesterday at the press unveiling of a chocolate-covered suite inside the Bryant Park Hotel. The candy-laden room—where the winner of Godiva's Valentine's Day competition will stay for a weekend—is a concept the company introduced last year. To beef up this latest effort, the chocolatier partnered with designer Jonathan Adler.

"For us the three days leading up to Valentine's Day are the biggest selling days of the year," said Godiva president and C.E.O. Jim Goldman. "Last year [the promotion] was a huge success, and when you have a huge success, you try to top it. Jonathan Adler brings it to the next level." MORE >>

Cooper-Hewitt Decks Out Design Awards in Recycled Paper

At first glance, last night's eighth annual National Design Awards at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum appeared to be your typical fancy affair, with festive chandeliers, elegant centerpieces, and a striking podium. But a closer look revealed that the evening’s decor had a less-than-glamorous origin: the recycling bin. Caroline Baumann, the museum’s deputy director, and Mei Mah, deputy director of education, worked with David Stark Design and Production to give this year’s gala an eco-friendly bent.

For a new take on what has become an increasingly common theme, Stark had museum employees (and his own staff) collect discarded paper over the past six months, ultimately amassing 6,000 pounds of the stuff. Stark's team shredded the paper and used the papier-mâché-like strands to create sculptural decorations for the dinner and award ceremony, which was held in a tent inside the museum’s Arthur Ross terrace and garden. “Our staff was extremely supportive and excited about the idea,” Baumann says. “While we normally recycle our paper, it was great to know that something that would normally be considered waste would be repurposed to create our beautiful gala decor."
