Fashion Week Pics: Lacoste and Band of Outsiders Go Seaside, Live Music Adds Energy to Shows

Almost eclipsed by the pandemonium of Fashion's Night Out, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week got off to a quiet start Thursday. However, following some relatively modest shows in the Bryant Park tents, the fashion community's big trade show started gathering steam with Vena Cava's lively presentation on Thursday afternoon. Held at Milk Studios, the M.A.C.-sponsored alternative to the tents, the show kept the mood light by bringing in Brooklyn-based musical duo the Fiery Furnaces. Others also recruited indie rock bands to spice up their showings—Erin Wasson chose Gang Gang Dance to open for her Friday-night gig at Bryant Park and French girl group the Plastiscines headlined the Alice & Olivia presentation in the meatpacking district on Saturday.

"Fashion's Night Out" to Encourage Singing, Sipping, and Shopping While Shows Focus on Clothes

The event calendar this week, the first full week of September (and the unofficial start of the fall season), is already stuffed with premieres, big cocktail receptions, and large-scale public promotions. Among the events is Fashion Week, which starts Thursday and looks to be as subdued as the February outing was, as well as the Fashion's Night Out frenzy on Thursday, September 10.
The latter, an initiative announced less than four months ago, has taken off in a big way, with reports putting the total number of participating retailers in the city at 800. Meanwhile, shops in England, France, Spain, Japan, China, and Russia are also joining in the fray with similar outings. Beyond extended hours, discounts, and free flutes of champagne, each store has a different strategy to draw shoppers and, hopefully, boost spending and confidence. For instance, BCBG Max Azria has partnered with The Daily to recreate its spring 2010 show inside its Fifth Avenue store. And Teen Vogue is closing Bleecker Street to put on a block party that will include a runway presentation and a performance by Gossip Girl star Taylor Momsen's band. Trainer Tracy Anderson is hosting a public fitness class at Diane von Furstenberg's flagship, while the private shindig at Oscar de la Renta will have the designer serenading a group of clients and friends.

This week, as retailers and designers focused on menswear shows like Capsule New York and the Collective, news about other upcoming fashion industry events rolled in. The biggest topic of discussion is the partnership between M.A.C. Cosmetics and Milk Studios to host shows during September Fashion Week. Several spaces at the west 15th Street venue—including the ground-level gallery—will be used for runway events and presentations from designers such as Erin Fetherston, Temperley London, Peter Som, Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, and Vena Cava. In this venture, Milk Studios and the Estée Lauder-owned makeup company, which had previously sponsored IMG Fashion's lineup at Bryant Park, will provide the facility free of charge.
Also set for September is a pop-up store from designer Rachel Roy, according to WWD. Slated to open on Thursday, September 10—the official start of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and Fashion's Night Out—the small shop will be on Spring Street and sell items from the designer's new collection. Estelle is expected to perform on the night the store opens, and other marketing initiatives include serving free ice cream outside.

Events and Pop-Ups Are a Boon to Troubled Retail Real Estate—and Vice Versa

FROM LOS ANGELES
The recession has brought a flurry of “For Lease” signs to the windows of Los Angeles retail spaces, which have been vacated with particular urgency in high-rent districts like Melrose Place, Robertson Boulevard, and Sunset Boulevard. But the bad news for real estate could be buoyed by corporate event and pop-up hosts using those same spaces—and likewise some hosts are finding that a vacant retail space can be an efficient and attractive venue choice.
“[The high retail vacancy is] definitely encouraging me, with any event, to walk around an area I like and look at all the retail spaces as a first protocol,” said Harrison & Shriftman national creative director Ryan Jordan, who recently chose vacant retail and parking structures for the likes of Allergan’s Latisse launch, and a launch for Russian designer Kira Plastinina (whose line filed for bankruptcy just months after its U.S. debut). “They’re a lot more cost effective, and it definitely increases your bargaining power, since they're already vacant—in New York, Miami, L.A.—everywhere.”
The Beverly Center, which occasionally hosts its own promotional events, is actively shopping for corporate event and pop-up hosts. “I've been talking to New Beauty magazine about doing a pop-up store [out of which the magazine would offer relevant] seminars, maybe for a month or a couple of months. We've been talking to Los Angeles magazine about doing the same thing for the tastemakers issue. Also we’ve been working with [an animal rescue] organization to do animal adoptions [out of the space formerly occupied by a] pet store, since their lease expired, which would allow us to lease the space later,” said Steve Valentine, a publicist for the mall (which may be facing a significant new PR problem after the murder of a young rapper in daylight there on Monday).

Seventh on Sale Will Return With New Sponsors
|
MAC AIDS Fund, Marc Jacobs, and Topshop are joining the sponsors of Seventh on Sale, the charity sample sale started by the Council of Fashion Designers of America and Vogue in 1990, according to WWD. Other sponsors include eBay, Kenneth Cole Productions, and Polo Ralph Lauren. The sponsors will also help produce the event, which will include a black-tie gala and shopping event on November 15, followed by two days of in-person shopping and a three-week sale on eBay. The venue for the gala and shopping event hasn't been announced yet.
The most recent incarnation of the event was in 2005, when it was resurrected after a 10-year hiatus. The sale raises money for HIV/AIDS organizations.

Whitney Hosts Trippy, Hippie Art Party

On Wednesday night, Skylight felt like a concert straight out of the '60s—if a '60s concert drew socialites in expensive dresses, that is. It was the Whitney Museum of American Art's annual Art Party, and the combination of Joshua White's hypnotic, kaleidoscopic projections (much like the ones he created for the Fillmore East rock shows in the late '60s), two artful installations of inflatable lights from David Winston, and face-painting stations from MAC helped establish a retro vibe for the night's hippie-chic theme.
Hired by the Whitney's senior manager of special events, Sarah Milestone, Lewis Miller took his lead from the museum's new exhibition "Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era" and designed an open layout with fairly simple accents, leaving the rest to White and his trademark effects.
