Ellen DeGeneres's 50th Birthday Party
Submitted by Warner Brothers Special Events
To celebrate the TV host’s birthday and her move from NBC to Warner Brothers Studios, Telepictures Productions hosted a celebration that doubled as a segment for the comedian’s show. Organizers designed a vintage carnival and incorporated her favorite things, including dancing and games, as well as some celebrity guests.

In the News: Emmys Move Up, Suffering Book Expo Mulls Changes
|
Fairly Late Notice for Emmy Move: The recently announced N.F.L. schedule prompted CBS and the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences to move the live broadcast of the 2009 Emmy Awards from September 20 to a week earlier, on September 13. Variety reports this won't affect party and event hosts, many of whom hadn't even selected venues for Emmy-related festivities and promotions yet. And those who had already picked venues are apparently being accommodated. HBO's party planned for the Pacific Design Center will go ahead on the new date. [Variety]
Racy Korean Axe Stunt Campaign Gets International Attention: A Korean advertising agency wrapped a women's dormitory at an undisclosed university with a calendar page, each day picturing an attractive female looking out of her window, for Axe deoderant. The firm responsible said they "aimed for the expression that a new female can be met on a daily basis." Accusations of sexism abounded on blogs earlier this week, but the stunt's extension outside its intended marketplace speaks for itself. [Gizmodo]

In The News: Morbid Stunt Spooks London Locals, Top Model Fails to File Proper Permits
|
Guerrilla Stunt for Video Game Alarms London: The marketing team behind the U.K. launch of Capcom video game Resident Evil 5 recently caused a stir with a scavenger hunt promotion that scared Londoners into calling the police. After scattering hundreds of realistic-looking body parts and decapitated heads around the city, organizers told participants to gather as many as they could find for a chance to win a trip to Africa. Unfortunately—or fortunately, considering the many news outlets that picked up the story—producers didn't count on how the authenticity would affect those not in the know. [BrandFreak]
The New Yorker Downsizes Conference: Planners of the second New Yorker Innovation Conference have decided to take a step back from this year's event. The two-day $1,200-a-head conference, which was to be held at the InterActiveCorp. building, is out the window, replaced by a much cheaper one-day summit. The more modest price of $350 will give guests a perspective on President Obama's first 100 days in office, with speeches by Malcolm Gladwell and Howard Dean. [WWD]

FROM LOS ANGELES
The MTV Movie Awards show did go on at the Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal Citywalk last night, despite yesterday’s blazing fire at Universal Studios. The Mike Myers-hosted event doled out golden popcorn statuettes to a bevy of entertainers including Will Smith, Johnny Depp, and Ellen Page, and featured comedy from Myers, plus musical performances by Coldplay and the Pussycat Dolls. Out in front, we asked guests what they thought of this year’s program as they exited the show and made their way to the after-party. Here’s what they had to say:
“A lot of fun; open bar. It’s a lot of young Hollywood, a lot of inter-studio politics, but it was fun. To see Coldplay and the Wayne’s World skit with Mike Myers was pretty cool.”
—Ben Lyons, movie critic, E! Entertainment Television
“The Pussycat Dolls were great. I thought in person it would go really slow, but the show kept moving pretty well. They had a guy come out during the breaks that got everyone riled up.”
—Michael Trygstad, owner, Wet International Inc.

Target Transforms Raw Venue With Moving Collages for MTV After-Party
|
FROM LOS ANGELES
If MTV's demographic can be loosely defined as young and slightly irreverent, so can those words describe the demographic for consumers of the Converse One Star collection recently launched at Target stores. So for Target to host an unofficial MTV Movie Awards after-party last night in honor of the new collection seemed, ahem, right on target.
Target's events and marketing team tapped Cara Kleinhaut of Caravents to produce the party, which featured a fully customized, built-out setup on the Lot's plain Stage 7, meant to create an experience and a look that represented the indie-slash-youth demo that Converse courts. To that end, DJ Steve Aoki spun records for the hipster-heavy crowd of about 500, and M.I.A. performed a high-energy set in her signature genre-busting style and neon costumes. But the big story of the night wasn't just the colorful, crowd-pleasing performance; it was the venue's look, which was a highly visual, multimedia spectacle.
