Monday saw the return of two magazine pop-ups. The third incarnation of the Bon Appétit Supper Club & Café opened its doors at 11 a.m., and in the evening Esquire launched its seventh experiential living space, dubbed Esquire SoHo, with the after-party for Michael Moore's new documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story. In each case, a fresh location offered a change of pace for the pop-ups' look and new technology sponsors added interactive elements for guests.

At Macy's Flower Show, I Liked the Orchid Peacock, Wigmaker, and Confetti Drop

I was getting tired of staring at my unborn flowerbeds, so I jumped at the chance to attend the first day of the 35th annual Macy’s Flower Show on Sunday, April 5. The event coincided with a return engagement of the Petacular, a day of celebrating animals, kids, and a few other oddly mismatched but truly American traditions, including boy bands, Colonial Williamsburg, and of course, face painting. I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to have so many different parts of my brain stimulated.
Nor could my dog, Turbo. We were up early to customize his monkey/banana costume purchased just the day before at Baby Gap. (We needed to cut a hole for his tail.) It was Turbo’s second costume party, and he now knows the initial humiliation of the costuming is worth it.
But before I tell you about the dog/catwalk on wheels, let’s take a look at the flowers. The Macy’s Flower Show is really quite amazing, and even you snobs who claim to have never set foot into the world’s largest department store should get over yourself and head for the garden miracle on 34th street. You have ’til the 19th.

Gourmet, Macy's, and Showtime Partner to Launch New Season of The Tudors

Tudor period garb and table settings inside the Condé Nast executive dining room designed by Frank Gehry may seem about as unusual a juxtaposition as you could find. A similarly unconventional mix marked the marketing partnership that brought Gourmet, Macy's, and Showtime together for Monday night's premiere party for The Tudors at the magazine publisher's Times Square headquarters. Around 150 guests joined the trio of sponsors to celebrate the show's third season and the promotional campaign highlighting Tudor-style food and design.
"We're in a multichannel arena, and everyone is just looking for ways to increase viewers, readers, and consumers," said Gourmet associate publisher of marketing and creative services Susan Bornstein. "When we look at partners, there has to be a way to showcase everyone as individuals, but in a way that's always organic."

With the Help of Volunteers, Emery Awards Gala Packs Cipriani

On any given night during the fall benefit season, there are many different events competing with each other for guests, celebrity appearances, and media coverage. And it wasn't until three months ago that the Hetrick-Martin Institute discovered that its annual fund-raiser, the Emery Awards, would be held on the same night as another draw for gay benefit goers—an Elton John AIDS Foundation gala. Despite the concern that the competition would affect attendance, the nonprofit institute was able to fill all its seats Tuesday night at Cipriani 42nd Street.
Founded to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning youth, the Hetrick-Martin Institute's flagship program is Harvey Milk High School, where it continues to assist students. Sponsored by Macy's and Marc Ecko, the night brought in 700 guests, including New York City Council speaker Christine Quinn, Newark mayor Cory Booker, singer Eve, and actor B.D. Wong. Hetrick-Martin's PR and communications manager Shane Killoran worked with Broadway producer Jude Domski, MKG Productions, and numerous volunteers to pull off the event, which honored the M.A.C. AIDS Fund, philanthropist Peter Wilson, and actress Mary-Louise Parker.

FROM TORONTO
The four Harajuku girls Gwen Stefani employed for her 2004 solo tour weren't around to promote the new Harajuku Lovers fragrances in Canada—but they were emulated by models dressed in short skirts and pigtails as part of manufacturer Coty Prestige's traveling Harajuku Lovers Fragrance Lounge, which visited several locations in Toronto and Montreal from Thursday to Saturday. They also inspired Stefani's new fragrances, with each of the four girls, plus Gwen, representing one of the five scents.
"The fragrances are really fun, and we wanted to get the girls involved in the event," said Kim Husted, director of marketing at Coty Canada. The lounge—held in the Jam Van, a 24-foot vehicle designed for experiential marketing events—promoted the new scents in high schools, malls, movie theatres, and nightclubs in Toronto and Montreal over the three-day period. The mini tour started October 2 with a media preview.

One of the city’s most beloved traditions draws 3.5 million in-person spectators and more than 50 million TV viewers every year. The two-and-a-half-mile parade runs from the Upper West Side to Herald Square, and features more than 10,000 marching-band members, cheerleaders, balloon handlers, and other participants. The 2007 parade introduced a Shrek balloon and included musical performances from Good Charlotte, Dolly Parton, and Ne-Yo.
