Fashion's Night Out

After a successful first outing that wooed hundreds of shoppers with one night of celebrity appearances, performances, free cocktails, and sheer spectacle, Fashion's Night Out is set to return next September. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and NYC & Company announced today that the retail-boosting initiative will take place on September 9, 2010. Building on the first installment, which involved more than 800 participating retailers across five boroughs, the organizers hope to make next year's version bigger and better.

"The numbers are in, and it's clear that Fashion's Night Out was a tremendous success. Thousands of New Yorkers attended the events in all five boroughs, supporting the city's retail and fashion industries, and helping a worthwhile cause. It's sure to be an even bigger event in 2010," Bloomberg said in a statement. Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour added, "It was wonderful to see people embrace this initiative and we are thrilled that they wish it to return."   —Anna Sekula

New York Readies for Wild Things Premiere With Week of Events
With Spike Jonze's film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are opening this Friday, New York City marketing and tourism organization NYC & Company has teamed up with Warner Brothers Pictures for "Wild Things Week in NYC." An ode to the book's author, a local, the festival has free activities for children scheduled in all five boroughs through Friday.

"[It's] fitting that we celebrate the big-screen release of Maurice Sendak’s treasured childhood story here in his hometown where he found the inspiration to write the book,” said NYC & Company C.E.O. George Fertitta in a press release touting the programming. MORE >>

As photos, tweets, blogs, and news articles have shown, Thursday's "Fashion's Night Out" initiative brought a carnival-like atmosphere to hundreds of stores throughout the city. Crowds swarmed Midtown, SoHo, the West Village, and other retail districts for live music, free food, games, and other activities, which as a new report reveals, helped boost sales numbers. On Friday afternoon, Chicago research firm ShopperTrak released data that points to a 36 percent increase in foot traffic in Manhattan shops, compared with the same day last year.

“The overwhelming turnout in Manhattan lifted sales throughout the country, providing some welcome good news for participating retailers in an otherwise difficult 2009,” said ShopperTrak co-founder Bill Martin in a statement. Retail executives also agree that the initiative had a positive impact from just getting customers into the stores. “It was worth doing,” Claudio Del Vecchio, chairman and C.E.O. of Brooks Brothers, told WWD. “We do a lot of events, and we generally don’t get a lot of business from them. It’s more to show people what we do and who we are, rather than sales that night. There is always a certain percent that comes back to shop. The best thing about Fashion’s Night Out is that a lot of people came out and are still looking at shopping in a positive way, even if they didn’t shop.” MORE >>

In what may be considered the biggest citywide event since the economic downturn, more than 800 retailers in Manhattan and the outer boroughs banded together for yesterday's "Fashion's Night Out" event. Launched by Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and NYC & Company, the attempt to boost flagging sales and build consumer confidence blossomed into one of the fashion trade's largest efforts to target the public at large.

"The participation of over 800 retailers in New York City combined with incredible buzz surrounding the evening far exceeded our wildest dreams," George Fertitta, C.E.O. of NYC & Company, said this morning. "The objectives for Fashion’s Night Out were to celebrate fashion, promote the retail apparel industry, restore consumer confidence, and get consumers excited about shopping again and paying retail prices for merchandise. We are also using Fashion’s Night Out as a way to give back to the New York City community through our charitable efforts on behalf of the September 11 Memorial & Museum and the NYC AIDS Fund." Fashion's Night Out—a public promotion designed to galvanize consumer spending—now has hundreds of participating retailers throughout New York, organizers revealed this morning. Created by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, the City of New York, and Vogue, the September 10 event involves stores such as Macy's, Links of London, and Giorgio Armani staying open late and providing discounts, music, performances, and activities for shoppers. As much as 40 percent of the proceeds from the citywide event will benefit the September 11 Memorial & Museum, and clothing donated during the evening will be collected by the New York City AIDS Fund and distributed to HIV/AIDS organizations.

Of the many musical, athletic, and culinary activities happening during this kickoff to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the biggest will be the one hosted by Vogue's Anna Wintour, designer Michael Kors, and Macy's chairman and president Terry Lundgren at the Macy's on Queens Boulevard in Queens. The location will play host to a Vogue boutique, a show by the cast of Hair, and a surprise celebrity guest, according to WWD. Other notable events around town include salsa lessons at Barneys New York, a performance by reggae rapper Matisyahu at the Kenneth Cole shop in Rockefeller Center, and a Padma Lakshmi-judged cook-off between Peter Som, Cynthia Rowley, and other designers at Bergdorf Goodman.   —Anna Sekula

Yesterday Mayor Michael Bloomberg—along with NYC & Company, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, and Steven Kolb, the executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America—announced that September Fashion Week will kick off with a citywide event in support of local retailers. Dubbed Fashion's Night Out and designed to stimulate consumer spending, which has impacted high-end design houses, boutiques, and department stores alike, the public promotion on September 10 will involve more than 100 shops across the five boroughs staying open until 11 p.m., each offering in-store promotions and events.

And lest it be viewed as some sort of frivolous spending spree, the event will benefit the National September 11 Memorial & Museum through the sale of a limited-edition T-shirt. Additionally, the New York City AIDS Fund will collect any clothes dropped-off during Fashion's Night Out to donate to HIV/AIDS organizations throughout the city.   —Anna Sekula

Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is branching out. At a press conference yesterday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Billy Joel, Clive Davis, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum C.E.O. Terry Stewart, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation C.E.O. Joel Peresman announced that come November, SoHo will be home to a permanent annex of the music museum. To be located at 76 Mercer Street, the 25,000-square-foot facility is the first effort from the museum to build its presence outside of Cleveland.

"Establishing outposts like these is becoming a strategy of other major institutions," said Stewart in the official press release. "These projects allow museums to extend their reach, but also provide space to travel exhibits and allow curators to display some of our priceless artifacts for the first time ouside of Cleveland." Whether it’s a C.E.O. or hundreds of attendees coming to New York, a little local hospitality is always appreciated. Here are ways to thank people for coming, entertain them, or simply help them get oriented.

In April, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages held its annual convention in New York, drawing 9,300 people from more than 120 countries. Lisa Dyson, the organization’s director of conference services, wanted a designated spot where attendees could get local information. She turned to NYC & Company, the city’s marketing and tourism organization, to set up and staff a welcome station at one of the event’s hotels. “This desk helped attendees with tours, restaurant recommendations, questions about the convention, and general directions on how to get from point A to point B,” she says. “It really helped our attendees out quite a bit to have a knowledgeable person to ask questions of in a very visible location.” MORE >>

Canadian Sex and the City Premiere Party Re-Creates New York Street Scene

New York City—often referred to as the fifth leading lady in Sex and the City—played a starring role in the after-party for the film’s Canadian premiere at the Toronto School of Circus Arts last night. The Big Apple featured prominently in the party for 650 guests with images of the Manhattan skyline projected onto the bare concrete walls, a yellow cab parked in the middle of the venue, and an ice sculpture of the Empire State Building in the centre of the main martini bar.

“The whole premise of the event is black and pink, and the whole underlying theme is obviously New York,” said Suzanne Turnbull of McNabb Roick Events, who, along with Jeffry Roick, collaborated with Carrie Wolfe of Alliance Films (the movie's Canadian distributor) to create what Turnbull called a "glamourous party in a New York street.” MORE >>

Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday that Metropolitan Museum of Art president Emily K. Rafferty has been named chairwoman of NYC & Company, effective immediately. A member of the board since 2005, Rafferty fills the shoes of Loews chairman and C.E.O. Jonathan Tisch, who resigned in February after a six-year board stint. (Tim Zagat has been serving as the interim chairman.)

Rafferty, a New York City native, was unanimously confirmed by the NYC & Company executive committee and will work closely with organization president George Fertitta. The voluntary position is part-time, allowing Rafferty to maintain her role at the Met.   —Courtney Thompson
