Organizers of the 14th annual Gen Art Film Festival figured that the somber fare so often presented at indie fests was not going to win over audiences this year, so the slate of films set to premiere during the seven-day run highlight content that is a little more hopeful or uplifting. The fest kicked off Wednesday night at the newly renovated Visual Arts Theater with the premiere of Lymelife, a film set in 1970s Long Island, followed by a party at Chelsea restaurant the Park.

A crowd of 800 people made its way through the packed lobby of the theater, where sponsors such as Dos Equis, Three Olives Vodka, Neutrogena, Insomnia Cookies, and Vapor Water provided product samples, and several of the movie's stars (Alec Baldwin, Jill Hennessy, Rory Culkin) walked a diminutive red carpet. "There's more fun stuff going on at the theaters and at the parties," said Gen Art event director Kaki Stergiou of the many diversions. "This is a fun festival. You can do what you want." MORE >>

Us Weekly Brings "Hollywood" Party—and Its Decor—From L.A. to New York

Us Weekly’s annual Hot Hollywood party, like so many Los Angeles events, has always revolved around the red carpet and the trendiest venue. But for the party’s 2008 move to New York, the magazine took a decidedly different approach. Producers trucked in most decor from the West Coast to create a sponsor-infused lounge at Skylight on Tuesday night for the crowd of 850—which included the casts of Gossip Girl and High School Musical 3

Making it their third Hot Hollywood partnership, the magazine—under direction of Wenner Media senior event marketing manager Keira Ford—tapped Cara Kleinhaut and her team at
Caravents to facilitate the party’s migration. “Going into a blank-slate venue,” said Kleinhaut, “we could really customize to the sponsors and their signature look and feel. Rather than deal with existing furnishings and just throwing pillows on them, we got to build it from the ground up. It's really satisfying." MORE >>
