Draped Fabric Forms Kingly Tent for Opera Gala

Taking its cue from the spring production of Henry Purcell's King Arthur—a performance presented by the Mark Morris Dance Group, with costumes by Isaac Mizrahi—the New York City Opera used long strips of fabric to create a tentlike covering for its spring gala inside the New York State Theater on Wednesday night. The Opera's director of special events, Sarah Denton, oversaw the event, which was designed by David Stark and set up in the two-hour window between the start of the performance and the beginning of dinner.

For Denton and Stark, the challenge was not only to devise a decor scheme that wouldn't take too long to construct, but also to create a look that was as modern and progressive as the production but still spoke to the medieval motif. (Director and choreographer Mark Morris chose to discard Arthur's spoken text, and the costumes are a mix of modern and historic.) So while long banquet tables replaced the oft-used rounds, the menu did not include cliché items like chicken drumsticks and steins of ale. Using a minimum of bells and whistles, Stark focused on bright, spring colors and added subtle touches like daffodils potted in pewter mugs to evoke a medieval feast. MORE >>

New York City Opera Likes David Stark

Sarah Denton joined the New York City Opera two years ago as director of special events. She produces two major fall and spring galas annually, as well as family benefits, luncheons, and about 60 small events for patrons of the arts. Most of the opera's fund-raisers take place at the New York State Theater.

Decor:
"David Stark Design is such a pleasure to work with. On a personal level, [Stark] is very calm and easy to interact with, which is so important in this profession. He handles time lines and restrictions very well and doesn’t put any unnecessary stress on you. The New York State Theater's event space is a huge atrium four floors high, so it's important to make an impact on that space; for every event, David Stark Design comes up with an inventive idea that makes a big impact while maintaining a good sense of intimacy for our guests."

Flowers: "Urban Flora Design provides us with centerpieces for our pre-performance dinners, and schemes the colors around the opera while also responding to the season. Recently, we did an event with navy tablecloths, natural wood chairs, and tan napkins and chair covers, with a beautiful red floral centerpiece that gave an incredible punch to the table. Guests reacted well to the dinner and loved the production. New York City Opera has worked with Steve Geldman at Urban Flora Design for over 12 years." MORE >>

French wine, fine food, and opera—it was an evening of classic European tastes as the New York City Opera celebrated its fall season on October 2. “Fall Fête: A French Celebration” began with a Perrier-Jouët Champagne reception, was followed by more than an hour of French repertoire from the opera's performers, and concluded with a dinner menu created by Jean-Georges Vongerichten.

The event's theme was inspired both by the success of the spring gala, which featured the wines of Napa Valley, and by the night's honoree, May-Eliane de Lencquesaing. De Lencquesaing is the owner of the acclaimed Bordeaux vineyard Château Pichon Longuevulle Comtesse de Lalande. MORE >>

The list of reasons not to hold a benefit on a luxury ocean liner docked in Red Hook, Brooklyn, is very, very long. But when the parent company of the Queen Mary 2 offers up its iconic vessel for a night (along with staff, food, drinks, and more), what are you going to do-say no?

And so, despite many formidable challenges, the New York City Opera and the Brooklyn Academy of Music entered uncharted waters on May 24 with the Britannia Ball, an event that was two years in the making. MORE >>
