This Year's Fringe Festival Secures Ideal NoLIta Headquarters

Throughout its 12-year history, one of the biggest obstacles for the New York International Fringe Festival has been setting up a functional base of operations during its three-week run. Venue woes have prevented organizers of the multi-arts event from using the same space twice, but they’re optimistic about bucking that trend after this year, with FringeCentral’s successful run at NoLIta’s Openhouse Gallery.

In years past, Fringe creators and producers The Present Company have been forced to scramble to find a headquarters under less than desirable circumstances. “We’d have a donated space, but then we’d be the ones to put in three weeks of renovation,” said Present Company producing artistic director Elena Holy. “This year has been such a different experience.” MORE >>

The New York International Fringe Festival, which begins on Friday, offers a diverse selection of independent theater, dance, and performance art pieces, and takes over 20 venues for roughly 1,300 performances.

Included in this year's lineup are comedies like For Reasons Unknown, a play written and performed by BizBash contributors Andi Teran and Jeff Long, about a New Yorker who comes home to find a pile of feces on his couch, and how he and his best friend investigate its origin. And there are serious pieces, too, like Lucasville: The Untold Story of a Prison Uprising, which focuses on the 1993 riots at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility and delves into the subject of the death penalty.
