Ax Falls on ABC News, Viacom, Marc Jacobs Holiday Fetes, While News Corp. Parties On
Dispatches from the great holiday party flush of 2008 continue. After word came last week that ABC News joined media groups like Hearst by dropping its annual bureau parties in New York, Los Angeles, and Washington, big celebrations for Marc Jacobs and Viacom officially fell off the schedule over the past 24 hours, while the rumored cancellation of the News Corps. party proved a bit of an overreaction.

In an email from Viacom heads Philippe Dauman and Tom Dooley published by Gawker, the duo took the release of the company’s third quarter results as an opportunity to drop the holiday-party bomb. The cancellation probably won’t upset too many staffers though: In lieu of divisional or corporate celebrations, Viacom staffers—at least those who are still around after this week’s anticipated round of layoffs—get an extra two days of vacation between December 22 and January 1. After serving as sports marketing director at Rodale for two years, Bouker Pool was promoted to vice president of the marketing division in mid-March. One of our 2007 Event Strategists of the Year, Pool—who previously founded a sports marketing and sponsorship practice called Podion Sponsorship Group in Colorado—will continue to oversee the 7,500-plus annual sponsorship events with Rodale magazines Bicycling, Mountain Bike, Running Times, and Runner’s World through the Race and Event Series program, with plans to add more events that align with other Rodale brands.

“In my new role, I will be taking the success we initially created using our sports titles,” Pool said, “and will build similar assets for the other brands we represent, [like] Men's Health, Women's Health, and Prevention, as well as bringing all of our assets to large corporate marketing programs.” A triathlete currently training for this summer’s St. Croix and Lake Placid Ironman competitions, Pool said he couldn’t choose a favorite Rodale publication but is currently enjoying Best Life. All this month we're bringing you Q&As with our 2007 Event Strategists of the Year. Here's the first.

In February 2006, as Rodale was bringing its event marketing efforts in-house, the Emmaus, Pennsylvania-based magazine publisher hired Bouker Pool to manage it. His mandate was to dedicate the resources and oversight needed to capitalize on a race series and other events tied to the company’s well-known titles, which include Runner’s World and Men’s Health.

Pool, 35, began sorting through a program that was previously managed by a third-party agency—a situation he contends wasn’t working—and devising ways to improve it. Less than two years later, Rodale’s Sports Marketing and Events Group, which sponsors more than 6,000 running, cycling, and competitive athletic events annually, is thriving: Revenues skyrocketed 169 percent in fiscal year 2007. In the process, Pool and his full-time staff of six have sold both their peers and their clients on a strategy that integrates magazine ads with three-dimensional, one-on-one customer experiences.

Explain the range of events your clients sponsor.
Obviously, we have proprietary events in-house, such as the Best Life film festival, but our approach is to listen to clients and not try to shoehorn them into a proprietary event if it doesn’t fit, because we have the capability to go beyond our walls to create a custom program. We have relationships with more than 6,000 other events and festival expos in the company’s portfolio of events. MORE >>
