In an effort to promote the perpetually ratings-challenged Tony Awards on Sunday night, organizers held a student rush lottery at the Times Square Information Center on Thursday, distributing approximately 150 tickets priced at $40 to the winners. The giveaway was modeled after the many Broadway productions that offer rushes, discounted tickets released the day of a performance.

Jake Hirzel, associate general manager of Tony Award Productions, said the student rush event was planned all season. “For a rush, we needed to get it close to the date so it would be rush like. It wouldn’t be appropriate to do a black-tie rush on the day of the ceremony.” The decision made by the American Theatre Wing, the Broadway League, and Tony Awards Productions, “was not a difficult one," Hirzel said. "Radio City Music Hall has nearly 6,000 seats.” MORE >>

Bejeweled bees adorned the garden-themed after-party for the 62nd annual Tony awards. The shiny critters were among dozens of gem-filled insects, bangles, and baubles that decorated tabletops and centerpieces. Some 1,700 guests arrived at Rockefeller Center’s Rink Bar following the award ceremony at Radio City Music Hall, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg and broadcast live on CBS, with presenters such as Liza Minnelli, Gabriel Byrne, Glenn Close, and John Waters.

White Cherry Entertainment served as executive producers for the three-hour ceremony presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, and the team at Tony Awards Productions hired Lawrence Company Events to plan the after-party. MORE >>

Tony Awards Gala Colors Itself Black and White

The 61st annual Tony awards logo did double duty this year. The top hat perched on the statue not only  represented this year's ceremony, it also inspired the after-party gala at Rockefeller Center’s Rink Bar on Sunday night. Decor specialists Flowers, Sticks and Stones put the accessory to work in a variety of ways—as vases for flowers, containers for take-home baubles, and even light fixtures in one of the bar areas.

Is Angela Lansbury in It?
A few summers back I hosted a friend named Ben, who was ostensibly studying for the New York Bar Association exam and earning his keep working in the policy office of the Public Advocate of the City of New York. I now kind of get what that office does, but Ben mostly seemed to be running off to catch Broadway matinees and special theater-type benefit performances.

His energy and enthusiasm were impressive, if not contagious.

He was always regaling me with reviews of these wondrous performances, explaining how theater was living art, couldn't be replicated, blah, blah, blah. MORE >>
