Lincoln Center Taps Former Vogue Planner Wolkoff to Run Fashion Week
Four months after leaving her position as director of special events at Vogue, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff has accepted a job at Lincoln Center as the venue's director of Fashion Week, Fashion Week Daily reported Tuesday.

September 2010 will mark the biannual event's first time at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park—after 16 years in Bryant Park—and when planning gets underway for the inaugural event, Winston Wolkoff will serve as a consultant on internal and external coordination between Fashion Week's new home, producers IMG Fashion and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, retailers, and the fashion community at large. Fashion's Night Out to Return in 2010

After a successful first outing that wooed hundreds of shoppers with one night of celebrity appearances, performances, free cocktails, and sheer spectacle, Fashion's Night Out is set to return next September. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and NYC & Company announced today that the retail-boosting initiative will take place on September 9, 2010. Building on the first installment, which involved more than 800 participating retailers across five boroughs, the organizers hope to make next year's version bigger and better.

"The numbers are in, and it's clear that Fashion's Night Out was a tremendous success. Thousands of New Yorkers attended the events in all five boroughs, supporting the city's retail and fashion industries, and helping a worthwhile cause. It's sure to be an even bigger event in 2010," Bloomberg said in a statement. Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour added, "It was wonderful to see people embrace this initiative and we are thrilled that they wish it to return."   —Anna Sekula

As photos, tweets, blogs, and news articles have shown, Thursday's "Fashion's Night Out" initiative brought a carnival-like atmosphere to hundreds of stores throughout the city. Crowds swarmed Midtown, SoHo, the West Village, and other retail districts for live music, free food, games, and other activities, which as a new report reveals, helped boost sales numbers. On Friday afternoon, Chicago research firm ShopperTrak released data that points to a 36 percent increase in foot traffic in Manhattan shops, compared with the same day last year.

“The overwhelming turnout in Manhattan lifted sales throughout the country, providing some welcome good news for participating retailers in an otherwise difficult 2009,” said ShopperTrak co-founder Bill Martin in a statement. Retail executives also agree that the initiative had a positive impact from just getting customers into the stores. “It was worth doing,” Claudio Del Vecchio, chairman and C.E.O. of Brooks Brothers, told WWD. “We do a lot of events, and we generally don’t get a lot of business from them. It’s more to show people what we do and who we are, rather than sales that night. There is always a certain percent that comes back to shop. The best thing about Fashion’s Night Out is that a lot of people came out and are still looking at shopping in a positive way, even if they didn’t shop.” MORE >>

In what may be considered the biggest citywide event since the economic downturn, more than 800 retailers in Manhattan and the outer boroughs banded together for yesterday's "Fashion's Night Out" event. Launched by Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and NYC & Company, the attempt to boost flagging sales and build consumer confidence blossomed into one of the fashion trade's largest efforts to target the public at large.

"The participation of over 800 retailers in New York City combined with incredible buzz surrounding the evening far exceeded our wildest dreams," George Fertitta, C.E.O. of NYC & Company, said this morning. "The objectives for Fashion’s Night Out were to celebrate fashion, promote the retail apparel industry, restore consumer confidence, and get consumers excited about shopping again and paying retail prices for merchandise. We are also using Fashion’s Night Out as a way to give back to the New York City community through our charitable efforts on behalf of the September 11 Memorial & Museum and the NYC AIDS Fund." Gap and Oprah Join Vogue for 2010 Costume Institute Gala
Just in time for Fashion Week, WWD reported this morning on details for the 2010 iteration of one of industry’s biggest nights out, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala. Oprah Winfrey and Gap creative director Patrick Robinson will co-chair the May 3 event alongside Vogue editor Anna Wintour.

Robinson’s presence as a co-chair comes as little surprise, as Gap joins Condé Nast in financing the party and exhibition for the next go-round. The exhibition in question was also announced: “American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity” will chronicle the evolution of fashion’s influence on American women from 1890 to 1940. The show will run May 5 through August 15, and will be the first comprised of pieces from the Brooklyn Museum Costume Collection, acquired by the Met this past January.

After Vogue event director Stephanie Winston Wolkoff departed the magazine this summer, the 2010 gala will be the first produced by new director Sylvana Soto-Ward.   —Michael O'Connell

On August 21, online retailer Gilt Groupe took its road show of screenings of The September Issue to Nantucket, where some 125 guests—and potential Gilt Groupe customers—got a sneak peek at the new documentary about Anna Wintour and the making of Vogue's largest issue ever. Produced by Gilt special events manager Candi Naboicheck, the screening combined cheese and crudite platters, free concessions, and cocktails at the Starlight Theater, followed by passed hors d’oeuvres and a buffet dinner at the brand new Great Harbor Yacht Club.

“The subject matter of the film is a perfect match to our business model,” said Naboicheck. “This documentary speaks to our target members and customers, so it was a perfect platform for us to promote our brand.” Gilt staged similar events in Washington and Denver, both markets on the retailer’s “target list,” according to Naboicheck. Fashion's Night Out—a public promotion designed to galvanize consumer spending—now has hundreds of participating retailers throughout New York, organizers revealed this morning. Created by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company, the City of New York, and Vogue, the September 10 event involves stores such as Macy's, Links of London, and Giorgio Armani staying open late and providing discounts, music, performances, and activities for shoppers. As much as 40 percent of the proceeds from the citywide event will benefit the September 11 Memorial & Museum, and clothing donated during the evening will be collected by the New York City AIDS Fund and distributed to HIV/AIDS organizations.

Of the many musical, athletic, and culinary activities happening during this kickoff to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the biggest will be the one hosted by Vogue's Anna Wintour, designer Michael Kors, and Macy's chairman and president Terry Lundgren at the Macy's on Queens Boulevard in Queens. The location will play host to a Vogue boutique, a show by the cast of Hair, and a surprise celebrity guest, according to WWD. Other notable events around town include salsa lessons at Barneys New York, a performance by reggae rapper Matisyahu at the Kenneth Cole shop in Rockefeller Center, and a Padma Lakshmi-judged cook-off between Peter Som, Cynthia Rowley, and other designers at Bergdorf Goodman.   —Anna Sekula

Vogue Event Director Stephanie Winston Wolkoff Resigns
Vogue special events director Stephanie Winston Wolkoff resigned this week after 11 years with the magazine, according to WWD. As editor in chief Anna Wintour's go-to strategist, her largest task each year was producing the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute gala.
