Has the State Abandoned Plans for Javits Hotel?

Plans for a hotel within the planned expansion of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center may be scrapped, according to The Observer. The outlook for the development is ambiguous, especially after the state refunded deposits from hotel bidders earlier this month. "We are currently evaluating the market feasibility of the hotel in light of the reduced scope of the renovation/expansion and will make a determination on reissuing the RFP [request for proposal] thereafter, " the Empire State Development Corporation's Warner Johnston told the newspaper.

The original plan called for a hotel with at least 50,000 square feet of meeting and event space, but with budgetary concerns and the downsizing of the project, this recent move doesn't come as much of a surprise. However, the future of the site appears to be getting more and more unclear as officials seem less enthusiastic about the costly project, which has, according to The Observer, already involved more than $60 million spent on outside contractors.
