The New York International Fringe Festival, which begins on Friday, offers a diverse selection of independent theater, dance, and performance art pieces, and takes over 20 venues for roughly 1,300 performances.

Included in this year's lineup are comedies like For Reasons Unknown, a play written and performed by BizBash contributors Andi Teran and Jeff Long, about a New Yorker who comes home to find a pile of feces on his couch, and how he and his best friend investigate its origin. And there are serious pieces, too, like Lucasville: The Untold Story of a Prison Uprising, which focuses on the 1993 riots at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility and delves into the subject of the death penalty.

Heading off in another direction entirely are the puppet and poetry acts of A Silly Silverstein Show, adapted from the children's author Shel Silverstein's own words. Velvet Scratch, Voyage of No Return uses dark humor and live music to tell the tales of unwanted souls. Also part of the lineup is Big Beat/Back Flow, by Asami Morita and Nichole Arvin, which intermixes dancers, musicians, and audience members to create an interactive visual and sound work. The festival runs through August 24.
