| Cleveland's Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is branching out. At a press conference yesterday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Billy Joel, Clive Davis, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum C.E.O. Terry Stewart, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation C.E.O. Joel Peresman announced that come November, SoHo will be home to a permanent annex of the music museum. To be located at 76 Mercer Street, the 25,000-square-foot facility is the first effort from the museum to build its presence outside of Cleveland.
"Establishing outposts like these is becoming a strategy of other major institutions," said Stewart in the official press release. "These projects allow museums to extend their reach, but also provide space to travel exhibits and allow curators to display some of our priceless artifacts for the first time ouside of Cleveland."
Like the original in Ohio, this venue will feature exhibits centered around major moments in rock 'n' roll history, a collection of rare musical relics and a special rotating display focused on a specific artist or band and their time spent in New York. Also onsite: a theater that will use “immersive” audiovisual technology to showcase historical performances from the likes of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Chuck Berry, and The Who.
NYC & Company has partnered with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to develop an exhibit dubbed “New York Rocks.” This is to be an interactive map of locations in the city with some musical significance. Branded items and promotional merchandise such as maps and itineraries will be sold at the store.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex will be sponsored by Citi, Best Buy, Diesel for Bloomingdales, Gibson, and Continental Airlines.
