| The event space known as 583 Park Avenue finally has a resolution to its legal challenges. On Tuesday, a judge ruled, despite complaints from neighbors and opposition from the Department of Buildings, that the Third Church of the Christ, Scientist can continue leasing its Upper East Side property to the Rose Group for private events. According to The New York Times and court documents obtained by the newspaper, the decision granted by Judge Deborah A. Batts of Federal District Court in Manhattan prevents the buildings department from revoking the church's 20-year lease to the catering company. The lease in question allows the Rose Group use of the structure for catered functions, while the congregation continues to use the facility as a place of worship.
“We are elated with the outcome of the case," Louis Rose of the Rose Group said in an email Friday. "We do acknowledge this is really just the beginning. It is our intent to work together with the City to address both its concerns and those of our neighbors regarding our catering operations. We recognize there was a lot of misinformation disseminated when most neighbors first heard about us, and a certain level of fear caused a serious backlash against us. We will do everything in our power to ensure we measure up to what is expected of all citizens who appreciate this fine neighborhood and, of course, we hope to have the opportunity to be of service to them.”
Since becoming available last year, 583 Park Avenue has hosted several events, including Oscar de la Renta shows during Fashion Week, the Horticultural Society of New York's annual Flowers & Design benefit, and a recent launch party for Absolut.
