Peninsula Upgrades Spa With New Design, Treatments
Following a yearlong renovation, the Peninsula hotel reopened its trilevel spa and fitness club as the Peninsula Spa by ESPA on January 1. Designed by Alexandra Champalimaud, who is also responsible for the renovations of the Algonquin hotel and the look of Union Square's Tocqueville restaurant, the space is filled with references to nature and modern furnishings. Fitted with 12 treatment rooms, an Asian tea lounge, and a 42-foot-long indoor pool, this rooftop site is available for group bookings.

Situated on the 21st floor of the Midtown hotel, the Peninsula Spa by ESPA encompasses 35,000 square feet of space. Decorating the front area is a grand curving staircase and tree sculptures made from teak. Other striking decor elements include hand-carved benches made with salvaged acacia wood, translucent screens showing the work of artist and photographer Clifton Jaeger, and a 24-karat gold mosaic.

A wide array of treatments are available, from Finnish saunas and aromatherapy steam rooms to specialty facials and massages. In addition to this, the facility serves healthy fare in the pool area, and a sun terrace overlooking Fifth Avenue provides an outdoor area.

Although there is no limit to the number of guests per group, the spa is suited for small gatherings of about 12 for simultaneous treatments.
