Despite Snowstorm, Events Go On Mostly as Planned
The heaviest snowfall of the season has already affected most of New York—for the first time in five years, all public schools are closed for a snow day and more than a foot of snow has caused delays on the subway and other forms of public transportation. But for the dozen or so events planned for tonight, it's business as usual.

The slew of nonprofit functions slated for this evening, including a cocktail reception and performance of the new Broadway production of West Side Story for Girls Quest, the Guild Hall Academy of the Arts' Lifetime Achievement Awards, and the After-School Corporation's 10th anniversary benefit, will take place as scheduled and currently have no plans to cancel. In fact, the planning team behind the New York Academy of Art's Tribeca Ball dealt with similar weather last year, and isn't fazed by the current conditions.

Although no one was willing to comment on whether budgetary constraints and/or potential financial penalties were the reason for many of these events to proceed as normal, timing was a critical factor for one. As the first episode of television series First Lady of Jamaica premieres tomorrow night, the private preview screening hosted by WE tv, Al Roker, and the Jamaica Tourist Board can't be moved to a later date.

That's not to say that the sudden blizzard hasn't caused problems. The weather grounded the auctioneer for the Women's Project, which is hosting its Women of Achievement awards gala at the Pierre, and at the last minute the arts organization had to find a replacement. Meanwhile, to avoid guest cancellations, private club Quintessentially has pushed the launch of its wine-tastings program to Tuesday, March 17.
