INSPIRATION: The Whitney's State of the Arts
The exhibition that everyone has an opinion about is upon us again—the latest Whitney Biennial, titled “Day for Night,” is a collection of painting, sculpture, video, and photography assembled to provide a statement on the current state of art. Artists, which this year include not just Americans but also Europeans, have been selected by curators Chrissie Iles and Philippe Vergne, and the big show focuses on moody themes—including works and installations that have an erotic, lavish, political, and violent feel. Included among some 100 artists and creative groups’ pieces are JP Munro’s romantic, somewhat mythological paintings as well as the dramatic film A Journey That Wasn’t (pictured) by Pierre Huyghe, which was partially made in Central Park’s Wollman Rink. Sure to be controversial, the exhibit opens March 2 and continues through May 28. —Mark Mavrigian
