This Week: Solar-Paneled Hotel Planned for SoHo, City Saturated With Too Many Arenas

  • New York may have too many arenas—a number that will grow to five when Bruce Ratner's Atlantic Yards facility opens sometime in the next few years—and not enough events to fill them. [NYT]
  • An environmentally friendly 26-story hotel on Varick Street will be powered by solar energy, with glass that could generate as much as 100 kilowatts of power. [NYO]
  • There's also another hotel planned, this time a 24-floor, 175-room Midtown site from Extell Development. [NYO]
  • The owners of Brooklyn Bowl, the bowling and entertainment venue expected to open this week, took care to create an eco-friendly site. [NYT]

After more than 10 years in an Upper East Side brownstone, chef Charlie Palmer's Aureole moved to a new location between Bryant Park and Times Square, a site that debuted to the public yesterday and will host a grand opening gala with Citymeals-on-Wheels on September 15. With more than double the capacity of the old space—up from 95 seats to 209—the restaurant now offers a private dining area, a casual bar room, an enclosed main dining section, and seasonal seating outside. Located inside the newly constructed Bank of America Tower, Palmer's progressive American eatery has a modern interior design from Adam Tihany to match its surroundings. MORE >>

Payard Patisserie Shutters, Off-Site Catering Still Available

Payard Patisserie & Bistro announced today that it will close. In a newsletter emailed out late this morning, the Upper East Side pastry shop and restaurant disclosed that its location on Lexington Avenue will shutter temporarily as it plans to relocate. (Crain's New York Business predicted the closing back in May.) Tastings by Payard, the catering arm of the business, will remain available for off-site events.    —Anna Sekula

Brooklyn Clock Tower Site to Become Event Venue

Clocktower at One Hanson

Near the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Fort Greene, the former Williamsburg Savings Bank is currently being redeveloped into condo units and will, in September, be home to a new venue for meetings, dinners, and cocktail receptions. The Clocktower at One Hanson, as the event space is called, will be converted by the owners of Skylight and Skyline Studios & Gallery into a 15,000-square-foot facility with 10,000 square feet of usable space on the ground floor (not actually in the building's clock tower).

Since the site is landmarked, none of the changes being made are cosmetic, leaving much of the historic architecture—soaring 75-foot ceilings and wooden teller stations located around the perimeter of the room—intact. The Clocktower will also retain many of its cathedral-like characteristics and historic decor, including marble floors and old murals of New York as a Dutch colony. The space will hold as many as 1,000 for receptions and at present is available for photo shoots.    —Anna Sekula

Times Square Exhibition Site Opens With Room for Events

Discovery Times Square Exposition

Far from Museum Mile but around the corner from the Hard Rock Cafe is another house of memorabilia. Following press previews yesterday, the Discovery Times Square Exposition opened today. The site, a 60,000-square-foot facility born out of a partnership between the Discovery Channel and Running Subway Productions, sits in what was once the home of The New York Times printing presses and debuted with two exhibits—"Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition" and "Lucy's Legacy: The Hidden Treasures of Ethiopia." The venue is spread across two levels and, in addition to two main galleries, includes a cafe and event space run by Robbins Wolfe Eventeurs.

Although the specific details for hosting corporate and nonprofit events at the new venue haven't been worked out yet, it's likely that the setup will be fairly similar to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex, also managed by Running Subway Productions, where groups can use the entire facility with tours of the exhibits (no food or beverages are allowed in these sections) and cocktail receptions or small seated dinners in the dedicated event space.    —Anna Sekula

Spring brought a handful of new outdoor venues and since then several more have popped up. Here are four suitable for open-air events and business entertaining, plus one that will officially debut in the autumn.

1. Palace Gate, the 75-seat outdoor lounge of in the courtyard of the New York Palace Hotel, opened earlier this month. Sitting beside the ornate wrought iron gates with a view of St. Patrick's Cathedral, this casual spot serves a menu of bites—including chilled oysters on the half shell and truffle potato fries—from the adjacent Gilt restaurant, as well as summer cocktails like Pimm's cup and punch.
