Party Popularity--For a Price

The “socially motivated” among us have been offering a pretty penny to the gatekeepers of some of the city's most chic parties. According to New York magazine, PR mavens Lara Shriftman of Harrison & Shriftman, Lizzie Grubman of Lizzie Grubman & Peggy Siegal Public Relations, Lauren London of London Misher Public Relations (our current Impresario of the Week) and Jake Spitz of Network PR “all admit that they have had offers of monthly payments--ranging from $1,000 to $20,000--from wealthy New Yorkers who want to get into parties.”

London cites a hedge-fund manager who offered $5,000 a month, with a special eye on the annual Mercedes-Benz Polo Challenge that she organizes every summer. Shriftman claims another social climber offered $10,000 cash for her ticket to the Vanity Fair Oscar bash in L.A., and also promised to take out an ad in the magazine and donate another $10,000 to a VF charity. The magazine notes: “None will admit to taking the payoff--at least on the record,” but one flak admitted, “I'll take the money. Who the hell cares?”
