Pop artist Peter Max helped kick off Winter Restaurant Week at an impromptu press conference at San Domenico restaurant on Central Park South. In attendance were many of New York's restaurant industry superstars: Danny Meyer, Drew Nieporent, Tony May, Tim Zagat and Rita Jammet. Chefs from Vine, Lutece, La Caravelle and a contingent from Steve Hanson's B.R. Guest group were also in attendance, all dressed in chef's whites.
Following speeches by NYC & Company president and CEO Cristyne Lategano-Nicholas and Zagat, Meyer and Zagat held up special charger plates while Max drew on them with a Sharpie marker. The plates will be auctioned off on Ebay.com with a starting bid of $2,002 each. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Windows of Hope Family Relief Fund.
This year, Winter Restaurant Week has been extended for an extra week; diners can get lunch for $20.02 or dinner for $30.02 from January 28 through February 1 and February 4 through 8 at more than 140 participating restaurants.
