In a season of frivolous fashion fetes, the cocktail party for the Susan G. Komen Foundation at the Steuben store was a welcome change of pace. There was no velvet rope, no line, no burly doorman and no attitude. And it was all for a good cause: raising awareness for breast cancer.
Every year since 1994 major New York landmarks have changed the color of their lights to pink for one night in honor of the Race for the Cure, which raises money for breast cancer research. The cocktail party--billed as City in the Pink--was held to celebrate this year's lighting. It was definitely not your mother's charity benefit. The organizers all seemed to be in their twenties, and the event seemed more like a Soho art gallery opening than a fundraiser.
The young crowd circled the room, listening to live jazz by the Tom Pereira Quartet and admiring huge Steuben crystal pieces. They also sampled wines by Mionetto Wines and cheeses and raw veggies catered by Tentation. Red-tinted floor lights from Universe Stage Lighting cast a glow on the figurines and added to the party's colorful theme.
