We’ve all seen paper bags with logos, vinyl signs with logos, T-shirts with logos—both in use and in the trash. Curb specializes in eco-friendly media campaigns that are eye-catching but ephemeral. Since launching last September, the London-based company has cut logos into grassy fields, branded sidewalks with salt water, created product renderings out of sand and compost, and harnessed the power of the sun to burn portraits into wood. The company works worldwide, using only natural elements that can be sourced locally to create waste-free branding.

Beijing Photo Journal: Adidas's Massive LED Screen at Olympic Pavilion
|
BizBash contributing photographer Eric Powell is in Beijing for the Olympics this month, keeping his eyes and lens peeled for dynamic branding efforts in and around the Olympic Green. Since we last checked in, he explored the Adidas Pavilion and it’s spiraling LED screen designed by Creative Technology Group. (CTG also worked on the 43,000-square-foot screen used during the opening ceremony.) Besides the giant reel wrapped around the pavilion’s largest room, the biggest draws for spectators have been the exclusive Adidas designs for 2008 Olympians, including the Chinese women’s volleyball team and American runner Jeremy Wariner.

Rogers Cup Secures Record Sponsorships

Creating new partnerships and retaining sponsors like Rogers Communications—which just announced a three-year extension of its title sponsorship—is important for a sporting event like the Rogers Cup, according to Greg Wood, Tennis Canada's vice president of corporate sponsorships. “The key to our success this year is, number one, keeping our sponsors," Wood said this week. “We have been growing our sponsorship revenue for a long time. Since 2003 we’ve taken off. We’ve had 150 per cent growth in the last five years." According to Wood, the Toronto and Montreal tournaments will generate in excess of $17 million in sponsorship revenue this year. This year's Rogers cup wraps up at the Rexall Centre this weekend.
"Our biggest new pick up this year was the Dairy Farmers of Canada. They are a platinum partner at both [men's and women's] events," Wood said. The organization is also working with Tennis Canada on a grassroots program and national public service campaign called Everyday Champions. "It’s a marketing partnership where we’re promoting the healthy lifestyle of tennis and the health benefits of [dairy products]…there is a print campaign celebrating everyday tennis champions around the country and all of it culminates at the Rogers Cup with the Dairy Farmers of Canada Activity Centre at the event," he said. The centre includes smash tennis, mini tennis, sampling, and branding.

FROM INDIO, CALIF. Since the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, which wrapped yesterday after a three-day run at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, dependably reinvents itself every year, it's perhaps not a surprise that the brands that host piggybacking parties in the desert also change and evolve.
DKNY Jeans, which set up a multiday pool party at a luxury home last year, sat out this year's go round, as did Hugo Boss. "It's just hard to find the right house very close to the fields," said Hugo Boss Fashions' New York-based vice president of marketing and PR, Katja Douedari, who oversaw Boss's event series in 2007. "Loved the Mod Resort last year, but it's a long drive. And if you can't do it right, then better not do it all." (Nevertheless, Douedari made the trip out to the desert for some non-work-related fun.)
So what brands did have the strongest presence in 2008?

Following the concert, Calgary Economic Development hosted a V.I.P. sponsor reception at the Juilliard Restaurant and Lounge with guests from the Calgary Stampede, Tourism Calgary, and the mayor's office in attendance, according to Calgary Herald society columnist Tonya Zelinsky. Also on Thursday night, gossip blogger and eTalk Daily regular Lainey Lui hosted a party at Blvd sponsored by Pigsback.com, Skoah, and Rustico Prosecco. As Lui reports on her blog, guests received complimentary hand massages and Mavi gift bags.
On Friday night, Tourism Calgary held its kick-off Juno party at the Hyatt Regency with past Juno winners, nominees and record company executives in attendance. Along with the annual JunoFest that took place on Saturday, the Hotel Arts held an all-night private poolside party called Rock Star Hotel, with sponsors including Adidas and Fido. Also on Saturday, Calgary designer Paul Hardy held a candlelit party at his boutique to show off his fall/winter collection in an intimate setting.
