More than 20 teams raced around the city Saturday during the second annual Rally for Kids with Cancer Scavenger Cup, created and produced by Solutions With Impact to benefit the SickKids Foundation at the Hospital for Sick Children. The two-day event, which features a car rally where drivers are paired with a celebrity navigator, included a draft night party for 400 at Muzik on Friday, the "Start Your Engines" brunch at Harbour Sixty on Saturday morning, and "The Winner's Circle" gala dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel on Saturday night.
Developed by SWI president Joel Hock, the event's goal is to raise funds for children’s cancer research, care, and treatment. The inaugural event last fall, chaired by Goldie Hawn, raised just over $1 million dollars. (The fund-raising total for this year's event is still being tallied.) SWI took the event to Los Angeles in May and has plans to hold similar rallies in Miami in November and Las Vegas next April.

Femme Fatale-Themed Innovators' Ball Draws Inspiration From Spy Exhibit

For the third annual Innovators' Ball—sponsored by LG Electronics Canada for the first time and dubbed “Femme Fatale: An Evening of Intrigue”—the Ontario Science Centre drew inspiration from a new exhibit about the art of espionage to create a dinner and party that attracted a crowd of more than 1,200 people Thursday. “There’s an exhibit that opened April 9 called 'The Science of Spying.' Every year the Innovators’ Ball takes its theme from an exhibition,” said Matt Wiesenfeld, director of annual giving and a member of the event planning team.
“For the cocktail reception, we’re trying to take people back to the early days of spying,” Wiesenfeld said. “We’re creating a 20's- and 30's-era piano lounge with a singer and champagne.” Event management company Solutions With Impact created an all-white lounge with touches of green and purple—a nod to sponsor Telus—where models dressed as cigarette girls took photos of guests with LG Dare phones. “We’re working with some new sponsors this year so we’re letting them have fun with the event,” Wiesenfeld said.

The November issue of Air Canada's enRoute magazine has named Nota Bene the country's best new restaurant of 2008. "Chef David Lee and his business partners, Yannick Bigourdan and Franco Prevedello, have created a restaurant that is both democratic and elite," says food writer Chris Johns, who spent five weeks visiting three dozen restaurants in 12 cities across the country to come up with the list.
Other Toronto restaurants on the list include Harbord Room, which ranked third, and Lucien, which ranked seventh. The rest of the list includes Le Local (Montréal), Chef's Table (Calgary), Boneta (Vancouver), the Only on King (London, ON), Fraiche West (Vancouver), Liverpool House (Montréal), and Stage (Victoria). —Susan O'Neill

Twenty-five luxury-car owners paired up with celebrity navigators for the inaugural Rally for Kids With Cancer Scavenger Cup this past weekend, the final weekend of the Toronto International Film Festival. The fund-raiser, chaired by actress Goldie Hawn, and benefiting the Sick Kids Foundation at the Hospital for Sick Children, included three events created by Solutions With Impact.
"This is a Solutions With Impact event that we created for Sick Kids. We’re hoping it will become annual, and we’d like to actually take it nationwide, much like the larger runs," said Chad Brincheski, director of event marketing, who noted that Solutions has worked with the Hawn Foundation on other projects. "When we were putting the details of this event together we asked her if she would participate. She’s a huge philanthropist, so she was excited to be able to come out to Toronto and support Sick Kids."

Golden State, Land of Oz Inspire Santé Tasting Events

There are several factors to consider when choosing how to approach the decor for a wine tasting. Scented florals are out (they might interfere with the tastings) and white tables are preferred (in an effort to best show off the wines). So when it came to selecting the decor for Santé Down Under, an indoor-outdoor barbecue and tasting held to showcase the wines of Australia at the University of Toronto's Hart House on Friday, and California Cruisin', a wine tasting held at the Royal Ontario Museum on Thursday, organizers relied on large backdrops and video projections to set the scene.
Krista Slack + Associates worked with members of the Santé Toronto International Wine Festival committee to produce both events. "Really, the decor is very focused and very minimalist.... When you are doing tastings, a few things have to be taken into consideration," Slack said in an interview prior to Friday's reception. "I think thematically in terms of the space, we're utilizing some of the assets Wines of Australia have given us," she said, noting that the organization provided several printed backdrops featuring images of Australian scenery, including koala bears, the Sydney Opera House, and the outback.
