Flapper girls, newspaper boys, and mobsters interacted with guests as part of the Swanky Speakeasy theme at the fifth annual Scarlett Ball, held Saturday in support of the West Park Healthcare Centre Foundation at the new Allstream Centre. Heather Hurst, the foundation's president and C.E.O., called on Roni Feldman & Associates to produce the benefit, which is the organization's signature fund-raising event.
"Last year we did a French Moulin Rouge theme, and at the end of the event I decided I wanted to do a speakeasy, dirty '30s theme. The vision was to really do something exciting and different," said Feldman, who organized a number of interactive activities designed to raise additional funds for the foundation, including Scotch tastings and casino games. Guests could also purchase flowers, pearls, armbands, and head dresses to add a vintage look to their outfits.

For the 16th annual Venetian Ball, held Friday at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to benefit the Villa Charities Foundation, members of this year's volunteer organizing committee drew a record crowd, used elaborate decor to recreate the Piazza San Marco, and hosted a surprise performance by Frankie Valli.
Although event committee members knew they had some financial challenges due to the economy, Laura Dal Bo, the foundation's executive director, said, "they just made a commitment to really ensure the Venetian Ball didn't suffer this year." Dal Bo worked with event co-chairs James Di Luca and Steven Muzzo to create the theme for this year's gala, which drew a crowd of more than 1,500 guests—up from 800 in 2008.

Law Firm Hosts Rooftop Fashion Show for Bank Executives
|
Painted ladies, a runway show, and cocktails on a rooftop patio aren't elements you'd typically find at a law firm party attended by (mostly male) senior bank executives, which is exactly why Isabella Ben-David, a marketing and event specialist with Aird & Berlis L.L.P., chose to switch things up by hosting a client party on the Ultra patio Wednesday. “Every year the Financial Services Group in our company holds an event for our clients. This year they wanted it to be a little more exclusive,” said Ben-David, who added that group members thought a fashion show would create an interesting vibe for the event.
“Last year the event had a Muskoka theme, and the year before it was Hawaiian,” she said of the firm's annual summer party, which typically attracts about 250 guests. This year, the numbers were limited to 100 and the invitations were non-transferable. “It’s basically the senior executives of Royal Bank, Scotiabank, and financial institutions like consulting firms,” Ben-David said.
