Despite the current economic challenges, corporate sponsorships are on the rise at the 2009 RBC Canadian Open, which began Monday and continues until Sunday at Oakville's Glen Abbey Golf Club. "This year we’ve got more sponsors than ever," said James Laidlaw, director of business development for the Royal Canadian Golf Association, which produces the P.G.A. Tour event. "We’re actually up about 20 per cent, which is spectacular." (Twenty companies supported the tournament this year.)

"I think that the smart marketing companies are still spending money," said Laidlaw, who credits the Royal Bank of Canada's title sponsorship with taking the event to the next level. "The economy impacted hospitality sales; that seems to be the one area that was affected. Ticket sales were down. But of course now that Michael Jordan is playing [in the Mike Weir Charity Classic pro-am], ticket sales have gone through the roof." MORE >>

BMW Canada is offering clients a chance to preview the new 7 Series at an exclusive launch event being held in a pavilion at Showline Studios this week. The German automobile manufacturer began conducting a series of appointment-only preview sessions for clients on Saturday. Five sessions, for small groups of guests, are being offered daily in a custom setting—designed by Eventure Solutions—until Sunday.

“We’re allowing these customers the opportunity to see the car and to be introduced to the brand. We know their time is valuable. We know they have high expectations and we know they like to be tailored to,” said Stephen Lester, event marketing manager for BMW Canada. “This is our flagship vehicle ... the 7 Series offers us the opportunity to blend the brand message with the product message in a very exclusive environment.” MORE >>

After 15 years at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, organizers of Reach for the Rainbow’s 22nd annual Crystal Ball made the move to a new facility for Saturday’s benefit—becoming the first fund-raiser to be held at the Toronto Congress Centre North. “Our whole mandate was to raise more money. So we made some decisions, moving the event being the biggest one, and it was largely a financial decision,” said Donna Trella, the organization’s executive director.

“We anticipated some reaction that wasn’t particularly favourable, and there was probably a 1 to 2 per cent reaction initially. But on the night, I didn’t get one negative comment,” she said of the move from the downtown core to the airport area. However, being the first charity event at the centre—which opened earlier this year—presented several challenges. “It took a lot longer for us to sort through the logistics,” Trella said. “The facility wasn’t 100 per cent complete…they didn’t have door handles.” MORE >>

Design/Decor:Designing Trendz really captures the essence of the theme we say we want to build. Our clientele are premium buyers, so they expect a premium experience. They catered our charity event, and aside from what we planned with them, they brought in additional elements. Having no experience in design myself, Craig Gruzd can really piece together what we want to achieve, and the finished design is beyond expectations.” MORE >>
