Carole Boughannam Is Planning the Launch of Toronto's Holiday Festival—and the 2009 Edition of Nuit Blanche

Each year, thousands of tourists and Toronto residents descend on Nathan Phillips Square to mark the start of the holiday season and watch the official tree lighting. This year, the 42nd annual Cavalcade of Lights, presented by Scotiabank, returns to the Square from November 29 to December 31. (The official tree, a 68-year-old white spruce that stands 62 feet high, is already in position outside City Hall.) Spearheading the citywide festival—which includes fireworks displays, neighborhood tours, skating parties, and weekly concerts by the likes of Serena Ryder, the Canadian Tenors, and the Dragonettes—is Carole Boughannam, the programming manager for the City of Toronto's special events. Boughannam talked to us about the objective of the event, how the festival has evolved over the years, and what residents and visitors can expect this season.

What is the objective of the Cavalcade of Lights?
Our main goal is to create civic pride in the city and engage residents to come out and celebrate together. The holiday season is a really good time to do that. We also like to enhance the visitor experience. There are a lot of people who are in the city, whether they come from border states or just outside of the GTA. It’s really nice when they come to shop and dine during the holiday time to actually have something that really feels alive in the center of the city. I think it also helps to profile the city, so when people go back out to where they’re from they can really talk about Toronto as being a dynamic place.

The other thing we talk about is motivating travel—we really do want people to be motivated to come to Toronto and come here to shop instead of maybe going to some of the other cities around us. That, in turn, generates an economic impact. MORE >>

Interior Design Show Party Gets Dressed in Black

Last year’s opening-night party for the Interior Design Show took on an all-white colour scheme. The "Decadence"-themed anniversary party for this year’s I.D.S. proved to be quite the opposite, with black carpets and chandeliers, and performers in black wigs, makeup, and costumes. Creative director Ellen-Ray Hennessy of DareDen Theatre Inc. planned the large-scale event for the second year in a row, calling on her music and theatre connections to pull together a team of unique entertainers to fill the showroom at the Direct Energy Centre on Thursday night.

Hennessy said she wanted guests to be constantly reminded of the party’s theme, so she found an “underbelly of talent” from around the city, including fire performers, burlesque and modern dancers, a man on stilts, and 30 “live statues,” some decked in dresses made entirely of flowers and greenery (provided by the Dutch consulate). Street artist Mike Parsons worked on a 10-foot by 10-foot canvas, which was later purchased by a guest. MORE >>

For the media launch of its new E! television network, CanWest MediaWorks chose the presentation centre at the luxurious Four Seasons Private Residences condominium and hotel complex in Yorkville. Event co-producers Krista Slack & Associates and Best Events LA, with help from Wendy Schellinger, executive director of Spec Events for E Network LA, used the interior and exterior of the Brian Gluckstein-designed space, installing a tent from Regal Tent Productions in the parking lot and a long red carpet to the street.

Guests arrived amidst a display of light and sound from Westbury National Show Systems. Upon making their way inside, many gravitated to a huge bar in the middle of the presentation centre. Furnishings by Corey provided decor elements such as intricate florals, plush monogrammed carpets, chromed railings, and arrangements of modern white lounge furnishings. Outside, umbrellas sprouted from cement planters emblazoned with the E! logo. The planters were placed strategically around the parking lot, giving guests private schmoozing spaces beyond the crush of the crowd. Daniel et Daniel catered the event, Holmes Communications provided public relations and Sean Paul and DJ Skye Nellor supplied the entertainment. MORE >>
