Earlier this week we offered a glimpse inside some of the sponsored lounges that have popped up in the Bloor-Yorkville neighbourhood during the Toronto International Film Festival. Here’s a look at a few more.
The Tastemakers Lounge, produced by Rock-It Promotions, adopted an "Ohhh Canada!" theme for its fourth installment in the Portman Room at the InterContinental Hotel on Bloor Street. Tastemakers founder Debra Goldblatt worked with Jason MacIsaac, owner and founder of the retail shop Ministry of the Interior, and Pink Twig Floral Boutique to dress the space, which featured a temporary wall showcasing Timorous Beasties’ damask wallpaper, flooring by the Shaw Contract Group and custom furnishings including a Wrongwoods credenza.
Goldblatt selected 20 companies to feature in the lounge, which opened September 6 and wraps up Friday. Participants this year included AG Hair Cosmetics, Burt’s Bees, Carry Clean, Cromwell & Cruthers, Eska Water, HBC, Ike & Sam’s, Joe Fresh Style, J.R. Watkins Apothecary, JUZD, Kiss My Face, LypSyl, PUMA, Raincry, Ruby Gloom, Sabon, Salt Spring Coffee, Strellson, Teuscher Chocolates of Switzerland, and Trollbeads.

At our annual trade show yesterday at the Direct Energy Centre, we announced the winners of the BizBash Event Style Awards. Here's a rundown:
Best Entertainment Program/Concept
Nexen Inc.’s "Feel the Beat" party, submitted by Experiential Events
Experiential Events packed Calgary’s Telus Convention Centre with eight styles of entertainment for Nexen Inc.’s employee-appreciation party in September. The oil and gas company wanted to branch out, and the event planning company chose to include musical, cirque, and dance performances. To keep guests on their toes, the acts performed on multiple stages around the venue, and attendees were encouraged to take part in salsa lessons and playing a floor-to-ceiling harp.
Best Corporate Event Concept (Budget More Than $50,000)
Piller’s 50th anniversary celebration, submitted by Big Events Inc.
Piller’s enlisted Big Events Inc. to create a Western-themed 50th anniversary party at the meat company’s Waterloo headquarters last June. Although the celebration was relaxed and fun, it managed to be upscale at the same time, with sleek white couches, cowhide pillows, and a wood floor dressing the tent for 600 V.I.P. clients (900 staff members also attended). The entertainment stayed true to the party’s theme, and included a rodeo, pig races, and barn dancing with fiddlers.

Art Gallery of Ontario Gala Celebrates Change
|

|
Metamorphosis was the theme of the 2007 Shadow Ball, the Art Gallery of Ontario’s annual masquerade fund-raiser. The focus on change was fitting as the gallery was scheduled to close soon after to allow for completion of a major, Frank Gehry-designed renovation project. Works of art from the AGO’s collection and newly commissioned exhibits by leading artists were used to reinforce the transformation theme, while guests added to the occasion with their pre-Halloween costumes and makeup.
Commissioned visual exhibits included Jennifer Angus’s petrified insect wallpaper and Gwen McGregor’s “Body of Knowledge,” which consisted of hundreds of plexi cubes containing oranges in various stages of decomposition. Sherri Hay’s interactive exhibit, titled “Crow,” invited guests to pose for photos in a fun but sinister setting. Alternative violinist Reena Katz performed live during the reception, and bathroom visits involved encounters with Andrew Hunter’s “Loomings,” a continuous audio loop of sound bites from the movie Jaws.

For CTV Inc., Friday September 7 was a smash hit that took full advantage of the vast, 4500 square foot second floor open space created within their landmark 299 Queen Street West building. The eTalk Star! Schmooze, planned by CTV Inc.'s Special events and merchandising director, Francine Socket, brought together a variety of film, TV and publishing mavens to not only chat about the Toronto International Film Festival but also witness the launch of "Celebrating 50 Years of Canadian Stars", the highly anticipated new book from McArthur & Company.
Other topics on the table included the official launch of the partnership between the former CHUM Television, NBC Universal Canada and the Historical Foundation of Canada. The meet & greet at the revamped building on 299 Queen Street West was enhanced by appetizers prepared and served By Davids catering including fresh rolled sushi, mini smoked meat sandwiches with coleslaw, and cones filled with fresh onion rings. Throughout the star-studded evening event, TV monitors broadcast the ongoing eTalk Star! Schmooze to partygoers inside, out in the parking lot, and viewing at home.
