The sights and sounds of life in Bohemian Paris filled the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts Friday for the Canadian Opera Company fund-raiser entitled "Operanation V: La Vie Bohème." The fifth annual dinner and cocktail reception treated guests to a special presentation of Puccini's  La Bohème. “Our goal for Operanation is to raise funds for the education and outreach programs of the Canadian Opera Company while making opera more accessible to a broader audience,” said Sarah Jarvis, the company's special events manager.

Jarvis worked with a volunteer team co-chaired by Greg Sullivan and Ingrid Chao to plan the benefit, which drew a sold-out crowd of 1,100. “The event now has a very loyal and enthusiastic following and they look forward to this event every year, as do I," Jarvis said. The evening began at 7 p.m. with a V.I.P. dinner in the Henry N. R. Jackman Lounge, where guests dined on French cuisine by Rose Reisman Catering. MORE >>

1. Bloor Street Entertains
With 23 exclusive boutiques in the Bloor-Yorkville neighbourhood hosting gourmet dinners, this annual fund-raiser for Canfar is the most prestigious benefit in the city. The 2007 event, which attracted 848 people, was marred by a bomb threat outside the Royal Ontario Museum, which led to the last-minute cancellation of the venue’s after-party. (Canfar staged an online auction in early December in an effort to raise additional funds.) The 2008 event will be held at the ROM on November 26. MORE >>

Luminato Receives Funding Boost
Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty handed out $2.7 million in pre-election grants to several local arts groups yesterday, including a $1 million gift to Luminato, a 10-day arts festival that will take place this June for its second year. But there was no money for institutions like the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Royal Ontario Museum, or the Canadian Opera Company in yesterday's announcement, The Toronto Star reports.

"It's great to have a down payment for Luminato, but there are other outstanding requests from other national institutions in Toronto that are waiting for their cheques," Toronto Councillor Kyle Rae said, noting that the federal government was expected to address some of the $50 million shortfall facing the AGO, ROM, and COC due to recent capital expansions at each of the facilities.   —Susan O'Neill

Canadian Opera Stages Black-and-White "La Dolce Vita" Benefit

With a "La Dolce Vita" theme, the Canadian Opera Company's black-and-white Operanation cocktail reception on Friday brought more than 1,100 young professionals to the new Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts to experience a new take on the decadence of Italy in the 1960s. As guests walked up and down the longest free-spanning glass staircase in the world, they indulged in risotto, antipasto, gelato, and delicate Italian desserts and took in the view of downtown Toronto.

COC special events manager Sarah Jarvis said the benefit's committee worked especially hard to lure guests this year. "In this day and age, there's such a demand and almost an oversaturation of young professional events," said Jarvis, who said their main outreach to guests included personal emails, a Facebook group, flyers throughout the city two weeks before the event, and, of course, word of mouth. "It seems like every week there's something new cropping up, which is fantastic, but at the same time it's a challenge to compete in this market now, so we wanted to do something that was very significant that went hand in hand with the Canadian Opera Company."
