Canada's Walk of Fame Adopts Water Theme, Charitable Component for Second Post-Show Inductee Ball

As crowds descended on Yorkville this past weekend to catch a glimpse of stars like George Clooney, in town for the Toronto International Film Festival, the intersection of Queen Street West and University Avenue also saw an influx of star-gazers hoping to see homegrown notables such as Kim Cattrall, Blue Rodeo, and Howie Mandel make an entrance at Canada's Walk of Fame inductee presentation, held at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts on Saturday. (Other inductees included Dean and Dan Caten of DSquared, Tom Cochrane, Raymond Burr, Robert Munsch, and Chantal Petitclerc.)

This year marked the second time the Walk of Fame held its flagship event during TIFF's opening weekend and the second time it hosted a glitzy post-show inductee ball at the Sheraton Centre Toronto. But there were some tweaks to this year's multi-platform event, notably a new broadcast and creative partner in CanWest (last year's show ran on CTV) and a more prominent fund-raising component to the ball, with money raised going to international development organization Free the Children. KITT Car Theft Revealed as Publicity Stunt
A car theft at a promotional event for the television series Knight Rider last Friday was a publicity stunt, according to a press release issued today. The staged theft of the KITT car—appropriately dubbed "KITTnapping" by the show's network, E!—was caught on video and posted on YouTube, causing a flurry of online speculation. (We got in on it, too.)

The stunt kicked off a contest on E! in which people can post their photos and videos of the car's whereabouts in the city and win prizes such as GPS units.   —Erin Letson

KITT Car Stolen During Knight Rider Fan Event
A KITT car—the vehicle originally made popular during the 1980s television series Knight Rider—was stolen during a free public event outside Union Station today. A video posted on YouTube this afternoon shows footage of a man running towards the car after a driver positioned it for a stunt performance. The man jumped into the driver's seat and sped off, heading east along Front Street.

A Canwest employee confirmed the auto theft in an email. The car made several appearances—sponsored by E! and Canwest Broadcasting—around town this week to promote the new Knight Rider series that debuts later this month.

The theft could, of course, be part of the stunt; when we called the Toronto police, the officer we spoke to could not confirm that the car had been stolen.   —Susan O'Neill

Canwest Shows Off Acquisitions at Global Television Upfront
Canwest Broadcasting presented the fall schedules for Global Television and the E! channel Wednesday morning at the Elgin Theatre. The upfront, which drew more than 1,500 people, started earlier than usual at 9 a.m. and presented 13 new series, including the 90210 spin-off (starring Canadian actress Shenae Grimes) and the drama Dollhouse by Joss Whedon. Mike Holmes and Colin and Justin from HGTV, Justin Bruening from the new series Knight Rider, and Entertainment Tonight Canada hosts Rick Campanelli and Cheryl Hickey all appeared onstage during the presentation.

Instead of focusing on one show, the after-party drew attention to Canwest's recent additions like BBC Canada, History Television, and Showcase, which the company acquired last December. The upfront also emphasized digital media, with Global announcing that it will stream many of its new and existing programs online.   —Erin Letson
