Images of Birds, Feathers Fill Redesigned Ultra

Restaurateur and Ink C.E.O. Charles Khabouth—along with his partner Brenda Lowes—reopened Ultra earlier this month following a six-week renovation. The space, which closed New Year's Day, now features a more relaxed look thanks to a redesign by Munge Leung. A 25-foot solid-oak communal table is a focal point, while whimsical touches like the white feather backdrop behind the bar and the feather motif inside the oversize light fixtures in the lounge add a sense of playfulness to the space.

Khabouth, who called on Munge Leung to design the original space five years ago, said he wanted to pare back the seriousness of the original concept. The firm commissioned custom finishes, furniture, and lighting by companies like Applied Art Studio, Device222, and Castor for the project. A series of sheer panels featuring images of birds by photographer Stephen Green-Armytage hang in the center of the space and serve to divide the dining room. MORE >>

Following a six-week redesign, Ultra unveiled its new look Thursday at an invite-only party for members of the media and V.I.P. guests. “After five years, we felt it was time to push boundaries to explore the next evolution of the Ultra brand while at the peak of our success,” said Charles Khabouth of Ink, who owns and manages the Queen Street West restaurant with caterer Brenda Lowes.

The venue, which closed for renovations on New Year's Day, resembled a construction site Thursday morning. With less than seven hours to go before the media arrived for the event, the venue was full of workmen putting the finishing touches on the new look, created by the award-winning design firm Munge Leung.
