Baycrest Foundation Stages Ballroom Dance Competition for Annual Gala
|
Taking a cue from Dancing With the Stars, the Baycrest Foundation enlisted six community leaders and created its own ballroom dance competition for the organization's annual gala, held at the Sheraton Centre on Thursday. Michael Rosen, Baycrest's director of special events and corporate sponsorships, used lighting and lots of sparkle to create the feel of a television studio for the event, dubbed the Dancing With Our Stars Gala.
"We wanted it to be fresh, sparkly, and clean. There are no programs on the tables, no gifting, not a lot of flowers. Really what we've done is we've created a television show within a hotel ballroom," said Rosen who called on Gary Topp of Toppnotch Services Inc. to produce the event. The company constructed a stage and dance floor for the competition and worked with Metalworks Productions Inc. on the audiovisual and lighting for the event. "The whole idea is sparkle. When the lights go, it's going to be wild," Rosen said.

Canadian Film Centre Gala Celebrates the Art of Cinema
|
The Canadian Film Centre (C.F.C.) focused on the art of cinema for its annual gala this year, so it was almost fitting that scheduled host Mary Walsh—best known for her television work—cancelled due to illness and was replaced by film star Eugene Levy. Booking Levy the day before the event was "a combination of chance, availability, and amazing people reaching out to help," said Rachel Noonan, manager of strategic partnerships, development, and events at the C.F.C. "It was also great timing that [Levy] happened to be in Toronto."
Levy and other Canadian actors such as Gordon Pinsent and Shawn Ashmore fit well with the tone of the event at the Kool Haus, which marked the 20th anniversary of the C.F.C. The Cinephilia theme (conceptualized by ad agency Taxi) aimed to make guests feel like part of a society of film lovers, so as more than 500 people arrived in the main hall, hanging signs pointed out attributes that distinguish the cinephile society: "You rarely venture below channel 31" and "You critique film critics."

Cineplex Opens Fairview Mall Cinemas With Hollywood-Themed Cocktail Party
|
To mark the opening of the renovated SilverCity Fairview Mall Cinemas, Cineplex Entertainment hosted a cocktail party for 600 guests Thursday, followed by a sneak preview of the new Keanu Reeves film The Day the Earth Stood Still, which hits theatres on December 28. “It’s a private event so it’s a mixture of our key corporate partners—film studios, suppliers. It’s a really exclusive event for us,” said Sarah Lewthwaite, executive director of marketing at Cineplex Entertainment. "Because we’re a movie theatre, it’s all about Hollywood, so the theme is Tinseltown. From the moment you walk in there are stars, the food is upscale, there are special martinis, and the catering staff are in tuxedo shirts. It’s as close to Hollywood as you can get in Toronto."
