A Sky-High Approach to Marketing

If you're looking to draw attention to an event or promotion, Flogos Canada can create cloud-like images that float in the sky. The company, which acquired the Canadian rights to the product last year, uses helium-injected biodegradable soap foam to create custom designs. The foam is forced through a stencil by a generator to create an image, with roughly one design being released every 15 seconds. Flogos can be formulated to last for as long as their visual impact is needed and can travel 20 to 30 miles and go as high as 20,000 feet. Flogo generators are available in 24-, 36-, and 48-inch versions. The company's in-house art department can create custom designs in two to three days, and colour-tinted flogos are available. A single generator costs $3,500 for a four-hour rental.   —Susan O'Neill

Samsung (in collaboration with Telus) and Fido launched street marketing events last week that caught the attention of passersby and media. At the beginning of the week Fido placed two 30-foot-tall white figures called "Fidolls" at opposite ends of the city to promote Fido Sessions, a quarterly series of art and culture events sponsored by the phone service provider. The two inflatable figures shaped like paper doll cutouts have texting instructions written across them and are being moved together to meet at the Burroughes Building on Wednesday for the first Fido Session. Other Fidolls have appeared around the city in the form of chalk art and tree hangers.

Gift Suites Fill the Gladstone for Rockstar Hotel Promotion

Artists in town for the 19th annual MuchMusic Video Awards filled gift bags with products from brands like Puma, Fido, and Zune on Saturday at the fourth installment of Rockstar Hotel, produced by District Lifestyle Marketing. The event—launched at the Juno Awards in Saskatoon in 2007 and held at Calgary's Junos again this year—made its second MMVA appearance at the Gladstone Hotel on the eve of the award show.

"It's a total takeover. We've got it top to bottom this year," John Price, director of brand partnerships for Y Syndicate (DLM's parent company), said of the hotel. "Last year we got around to securing the venue a little bit late, so there were some folks who had booked rooms. There was one couple on their honeymoon. To their surprise, they found themselves partying with Maroon 5." This year, the Gladstone's main floor housed performance spaces, the second-floor rooms held the gift suites, and the third floor included a number of artist rooms where visiting celebrities could go to get away from the 700 invited guests. "It's very much that type of person who lives, works, and plays downtown," Price said of the guest list. "It is a closed list, so you do have to be in the know to receive an invite." MORE >>

While the 2008 Juno awards took place Sunday night at Calgary's Pengrowth Saddledome, the parties kicked off three days earlier after a free concert at the Olympic Plaza on Thursday. Following the concert, Calgary Economic Development hosted a V.I.P. sponsor reception at the Juilliard Restaurant and Lounge with guests from the Calgary Stampede, Tourism Calgary, and the mayor's office in attendance, according to Calgary Herald society columnist Tonya Zelinsky. Also on Thursday night, gossip blogger and eTalk Daily regular Lainey Lui hosted a party at Blvd sponsored by Pigsback.com, Skoah, and Rustico Prosecco. As Lui reports on her blog, guests received complimentary hand massages and Mavi gift bags.

On Friday night, Tourism Calgary held its kick-off Juno party at the Hyatt Regency with past Juno winners, nominees and record company executives in attendance. Along with the annual JunoFest that took place on Saturday, the Hotel Arts held an all-night private poolside party called Rock Star Hotel, with sponsors including Adidas and Fido. Also on Saturday, Calgary designer Paul Hardy held a candlelit party at his boutique to show off his fall/winter collection in an intimate setting. World Vision sponsored the party, with catering by River Cafe and entertainment by the band Shaye. MORE >>

As the group director of business development and promotions for Flare magazine and Hello! Canada, Tracy Finkelstein—together with her team of three—is responsible for producing between 15 to 20 events a year, including red-carpet galas, cocktail parties, consumer shopping events, and client receptions. Finkelstein is currently finalizing plans for a private party (being cohosted by Fido and featuring a performance by the Juno-nominated band Dragonette) for 400 at the Drake Hotel to celebrate fashion, music, and technology during Toronto Fashion Week.

Catering:
"We have two unbelievable caterers we rely on. For smaller, more intimate cocktail receptions, we work with the Salt & Pepper Catering Company. Stefanie Tortorella, the owner, really understands our guests and always delivers innovative menus—not to mention her cupcakes are addictive. After every event the company caters [for us], I am bombarded with emails from guests wondering how they can get their hands on the white fluffy cupcakes.

"For our larger galas, I have repeatedly gone back to Dee Gibson at Catering With Style. Dee has such a distinct style that I instantly know when I am attending one of her catered events. Her food is delicious. But it's her careful attention to detail that impresses me most. Flare has relied on Dee for many years, and it's been a wonderful collaborative effort in pulling off grand events like our Canada Style Gala and Flare's 25th anniversary party." MORE >>
